Does the master cylinder need a vent in the cap? I have heard it does. However I have heard for type 3 brake fluid to not use it after a few months because once open it absorbs moisture. Well, if my master cylinder is vented then the brake fluid is open to moisture.

My 71' had a small TINY TINY hole. Size of a pin head.

Same thing, in my 2003 Camry. (which takes DOT3)

True DOT 3 absorbs moisture.

However it is recommended maintenance to replace the DOT3 Fluid in the entire system every 2 years.

yes it has a vent hole...as fluid level drops to fill calipers air has to enter to replace it...most american cars used a cover gasket with 2 rubber bellows that could extend as levels dropped but vw's werent that sophisticated

Yes for your brakes to function correctly you need to have a vent hole.
