I am putting a 62 body on a 74 pan. Curious how much width difference there is between ball joint and link pin front ends. So I can get an idea of how narrow of a beam I should be planning on. |

Looking through the owners manuals in the technical section...
'62 has a front track measurement of 1305 mm (51 3/8")
'74 has a front track measurement of 1394 mm (54 7/8").
The stock link/king pin beam I have in my garage measures:
Shock tower seam to shock tower seam - 31 3/8"
Tube end to tube end - 34 1/4"
Sorry, I don't have a ball joint beam to measure... _________________ Joey

You really cant compare owners manual tack width between those years here..
The wheel offset changed when 4 lugs were introduced and then again when the wheels were enlarged.... which changed the track spec measurement.
The ball joint beam width didnt change from 1966 until the end.. Only the wheel size and offset..
If you must use a narrowed beam.. compare what most use on a 1966 and 1967 car..
2-4 inches are the most common.

I know that the op asked about beam width. But what about height between the upper and lower beams?
Years ago I had a 69 baja and purchased a LP beam that I wanted to install in place of the ball joint beam. If memory serves me correctly. It couldn't be done without also changing the frame head to a LP size. _________________ I have learned over the years.

The OTS.. is swapping bodies... so.. frame heads go with the chassis (pan)..
74 chassis = ball joint..
But
Yes, Link Pin Beams and Ball Joint Beams have different separation between tubes .
The styles are NOT interchangeable unless the frame head is changed, the beam is altered or adapters are used.

Just set your body on the pan and see what the difference is. You may not have to do anything.

Not Thanksgiving here, ours was a month ago. Maybe if the OP said what his intentions were we could figure out what he wants to do and what parts he needs.......... If you just want a narrowed beam I couldn't go any shorter that 4"

Seems pretty clear to me the OP wants to install the body from a 1962 Beetle onto the pan from a 1974 Beetle and install a narrowed ball joint front beam as well, to which he wants information as to how narrow of a beam will be required and if that measurement is affected in some way due to the installation of a link pin body on a ball joint pan. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

Thanks for the replyes guys. I think I may have access to stock width link pin and ball joint bears drum to drum. I will measure them next week.
I am just wanting a narrowed look. But I don't want the car to look like a skate board with cip1 brms. Thinking of starting with a 3 inch and adjust from there. The reason why im wondering is, i plan to narrow my own beam and have the pan finished before i ever pull the body off the 62 pan.
The pic I'm posting is borderline to narrow for my taste but I also plan wide 5 disks.
