1998 2.0 gas golf
We sprung a leak at the oil cooler so this morning I replaced the gasket and the oil filter. Now the car loses all power on acceleration. It idles fine. In neutral I can rev it up with no problem although there is a whirring noise at higher rpms. When I accelerate it will go for maybe a second then rpms drop and the car will nearly stall. I can get it going again if I put in the clutch, get the rpms back up, then release clutch and give it barely any gas. It did this in first and second gear and I couldn't get going fast enough for third. It was running fine before I changed that gasket. Coincidence? Did I knock something loose?

Check the intake boot between the air box and throttle body. It may have a split or not be attached properly.

Thanks for your help. I checked the boot and it is connected properly and in very good condition. I checked all electrical connection and hoses in the area I was working and all seems fine...
Any other ideas?

I'm not sure...but considering that in neutral it revs up and down and idles with no issues, I wouldn't suspect a fuel pump or pressure issue...

When I changed the oil cooler gasket I also disconnected the battery to clean the posts. Not sure if disconnecting battery could have affected something?

It doesn't take much fuel to free rev a motor.

Disconnecting the battery can cause the computer to lose "memory" of the throttle body on some of the cars in those years. Try scanning the codes or having someone do it for you, if you get a throttle adaptation code you will need to clean the throttle body & have it adapted to the computer.

Is that something I can do myself (how) or do I need to take it to the mechanic?

You might be able to buy a cheap scanner to check & clear codes but it won't let you perform adaptation procedures. But it might be cheaper than towing it to a shop with no idea what's going on.

You might want to see if someone near you has a VAG-COM (Ross tech sells one that can be used with your laptop) that be willing to do an adaptation where your car is at.

I was reading some other forums and came across this to reset everything:

Disconnect the negative terminal from the battery and wait about 15 minutes or so. Reconnect the terminal and insert fob and turn to ACC and then you should start to hear the TB clicking as it tries to self align. Wait at least 3 minutes until you stop hearing the engine clicking and there is NO noise coming fom the compartment...pull fob shut hood, get in car shut drivers door start her up...I do this everytime I clean my MAF, TB, IAT sensor and Air intake filter...

-J

I tried it and it seems to have fixed the problem at least for now...
