Impressive stuff Greg! I think in another life you must of worked at Wolfsburg or something.....
What purpose does welding the ends of the springs serve?
Glad your cat came back! Been there done that, not fun. |

I had a picture of that 23 window hanging on my wall when I was 15.
The welded ends ran up through 64 or 65 and was just to make them easier to install. |

I assume you have to replace any that are broken? |
I replaced the broken ones with good used ones.
You can buy new leaf spring packs from WW. I have not used them before. |

I had no idea there was that much involved in an early beam's bushings. Every bounce will be a payback for your dedication and expertise. |

Welding the ends of the springs also keeps them from creeping out. I had a 58 bus and the welds broke and some of the springs in the stack were sticking out on one side about 3 inches, The grub skrews don't lock down all of the springs so they can float out.
on another note when in 1961 did they go from the beam with the v shaped support on the center pin with the upright supports to the later box shape support with no uprights to the upper tube. I have a 61 low hinge bullet bus with the later looking beam. |

I've seen that happen before. Not often.
I'm not sure when the beam changed, I have three 4/61 buses here I could check.
Front brakes are done.
I did the center pin too. |

I took a couple pics of the engine compartment after it was somewhat cleaned up. The pics are a bit blurry, I think the paint is decent.
The wiring will need some tidying up.
J3 in Tennessee put new fuel lines on it (Yay! Safety!) and a new filter under the tank, when they got it running.
I did see a short video of them driving it up and down the block. It was driven onto the trailer to get here. It was driven off the trailer and into our driveway and into the garage.
It was backed out of the garage in the morning to make room to work on projects, and then driven back in at night, a number of times. (We need a bigger shop.)
Maybe a few miles at most. Look at that fuel filter.
I think the tank is nasty. It will come out and get cleaned out.

Nice! Wondering what you are using for the front springs these days. I cant seem to find any correct springs for 62 and earlier. |

Thanks.
Finish was two coats of PPG DPLF black epoxy primer over bare metal. Wait a day, then two coats of Glasurit single state 22 line paint - mixed 4:1 with flexible gloss reducer.

As far as I know the springs are all the same for '55-'65? The '66-'67 springs might even be the same too, I've never bothered to check the lengths side by side. I've almost always have some on hand if you or anyone else are in need. |

Good to see the fuel filter out of the engine bay.....(you see so many buses with filter in the engine bay on samba it makes you suspect people are partial to the flame-throwered/barbecued look).
Personally I'd have those fuel lines clipped on though.
Meant to ask earlier back...why were the ends of the beam leaves welded? Stiffness? (Am I missing something obvious?)
Keep up the good work... |
