I was wondering if anyone knows what the difference is between a normal 356 1600 and a 1600 super engine is? Also how difficult is a super engine to find and how costly are they? Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

The normal engine has 60 hp and the super 75 hp. This refers to the earlier 356 models for example the 356A and early 356B cars. The last C series had 75 hp as standard.

The early supers had coated alloy barrels and various different specs to the carbs the same model but different venturi sizing.

To get the extra HP engines had other mods.

Most super engines will not be standard anymore, with new barrels and pistons etc. The normal engine can these days be updated considerably with items now available.

Roy thanks for the info! How expensive is a very nice complete running and or properly rebuilt super engine today? 5k or more like 10k? Thanks again.

It depends on the condition of the engine. I had my 1960 1600 Super engine totally rebuilt several years ago. With most of the engine not replaced it still ran me about $10000.00 but that engine has run like a champ--not cheap but a job well done. I can't recommend the builder because health issues have forced him to retire. I used original Mahle parts and kept the original crank. With aftermarket bits you might save some money. Good luck.
