Time to be back guys, You may know me from my earlier 71' Green Super beetle (which was sold to a happy new home)

That thread: http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=512250&start=440

Here is my new 71' super beetle, I was going to fly out and drive it back, but was unable to take the time off work.

It's currently being shipped down.

Since this was so far away, how did you get knotted up to this, and did you go there to check out, can't believe you went on trust.

But the VW looks nice, and I know you can fix any mechanical stuff, that's also my theory: mechanical stuff is easier to fix than body stuff.

Lots of photos, inspections, phone calls, title history etc.

If push comes to shove, I have a 100% new 1600 SP engine laying around, and a IRS transaxle.

I keep backup engines if ever needed.

The West coast cars tend to have much better body metal than anything in Texas.

I've bought 3 cars over the Internet and all turned out fine. But I know it's not for everyone. I did my homework and had a couple safeguards in place regarding final payment.

Looking forward to seeing this new addition. I know a top notch vw guy in case you need some help Cool

Looks great Thomas_
I drove a "Marinblau" '71 Super daily from 2008-2013.

To me, '71 is the most desirable Super.
'71 is the new '67 when it comes to Super's; flat dash, old style steering wheel, wiper switch on the dash, etc.

Good luck with your new car!

Aw man, i bought most of a dismantled 71 marina blue super a few years back. The parts were mint. I just sold the rear fenders but i still have the doors complete if you need them! Won't even have to paint them! Love the color and it looks like a real solid body. We can start a 71 cult. I really like them. 72 too except for the fancy " new" steering wheel! 😀

My first VW a 74 purchased as a repo in 75 was that color. My second car a 73 was as well. This was and is a very popular and beautiful color.

Thanks Mondshine!

I will be putting led headlights in as the first upgrade soon.

I too love the 71' year super beetles, maybe because it was my first VW.

I'll post some by the end of the week.

I will be replacing the oil cooler seals, valve adjustment, engine oil, gear oil, and brake fluid.

I do these regardless on any new car I own.

That's thorough !!! I would skip the oil cooler seals part if I just bought a VW if it had no indication of leakage there.

I'd eyeball the generator brush wear, and maybe pull the drums to see how much brake shoe life I had left, as my experience is that the inspection holes in the backplate are only of "snapshot" value. Then I'd adjust the brakes too, like I know you will anyway. I'm sure you'll add new valve cover gaskets, check the fan belt, clutch free play, headlight aim, air cleaner, turn signal and brake light operation too.

So looks like we're starting a list for a new VW owner to do, but I do all that all on my "new" used vehicles

I'm going with VintagecarLEDS.com

As I did in my last super beetle, I really liked them.

Yeah, it did have a bit of seepage from the oil cooler seals.

And I agree about the brakes, also rubber brake lines.

Just a peace of mind thing really.

I'll be installing the "Bigfoot" clutch pedal shaft.
