I'm a great believer in using our vintage VW's as they were intended rather than babying them, and in that vein, I am planning a road trip this June traveling from home here near Toronto, Canada to Seattle, WA, picking up my daughter who is planning to fly out to Seattle, and road tripping down the coast of Washington, Oregon & N.Cal to San Francisco.
My daughter will fly home from SF, and I will drive back since she has less vacation time.
Looking forward to some old fashioned VW road tripping, and will update this thread with our progress / adventures, since there are always adventures. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Have fun and take lots of pics and share them. Many of us on the east coast will never see that area of the country. |

If you take 1 or even 101, it will take a long while! Beautiful if you have the time.
We drove 101 north from SF to the Cali/O border, took it inland rather than follow 1 at that point. Plenty of ohh-ahh on that route. Taking 1 north of the border adds a crapload of time.
We took I-5 on the way south and it was crowded and boring... not fun at all, but fast.
Carry lots of spares!! |

I just did this trip on thanksgiving but since I didn't have to go to seattle we took a ferry to the peninsula
but since you have to go down to sea-tac I would head south on I-5 from there to Olympia then take hwy 101 to hwy 8 towards Aberdeen but get off at Montesano and head to Raymond/south bend which meets up with hwy 101 south
or if you want to see some cool beaches then head to Westport once you're in Aberdeen then you can continue south thru tokeland to meet up with hwy 101 again in Raymond/south bend
once you get to long beach WA. hwy 101 pretty much sticks to the coast all the way down to SF
one thing we didn't do that I wish we had done was to stay on the coastal route more after SF since hwy 101 goes inland a lot between SF and LA _________________ '60 15 window walkthrough

The 101 between washington and northern Cali is awesome. Make sure you spend a night in the redwoods and hike through them too. Really cool. Sea lion caves is pretty rad as well. |

I would cruise through Yellowstone & Glacier Parks since you are in the neighborhood & not in a big hurry. There is only one Spruce Goose in the World! http://www.evergreenmuseum.org/the-spruce-goose _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Not sure what your planned dates are but if you have any flexibility you might want to try to coincide with the Airhead Parts Treffen Cruise - the group goes from the Canadian border to the Mexican border, but all are welcome for as much of the trip as they can do. For 2016, it's going to be in the last week of July - more info here http://www.airheadparts.com/treffen/ |

Do you mean this Spruce Goose????
I stopped by there for almost 5.0 hrs this Christmas break.
I could have spent even more time there.
If you like airplanes you need to give yourself 8.0 hrs minimum..... _________________

^^^ That museum is unreal. The Spruce Goose is only the beginning. Do make plans to stop and spend some time. The space museum has an SR71 BLACKBIRD! YOU CAN TOUCH IT!
Also, as part of that museum there is a waterpark with a slide that exits from a 747 on the roof. Really.
This was us. The 65 standard and the 50 Buick clip on the roof rack. Good times.
Spruce Goose in the building behind the bus.
The WA and OR coastal drive is fantastic. I have only gone as far as Arcata, CA, but I have plans to go farther. You will not regret the trip. have fun! _________________ nothing |

According to their website, the waterpark is on limited winter hours, but everything is still open.
