Hi Guys...
I am not sure if this is allowed here because these are fotos of Suzuki Maruthis not VWs... but I was so amazed while recently in India that these little Suzukis seem to be exactly like Vanagons, except they are smaller! And in India there are absolutely NO Vanagons or VWs, that I fell in love with the next best thing

It might be tough to camp in one of those, like the similar-sized Daihatsu. _________________ '87 Westy in Wolfram Grey Metallic |

Welcome back.
These vans are 2/3rd of Vanagon in size. Engine(800 cc) four speed MT mid mounted with the power to the rear wheel.
-They are basically for City utility. It can easily transport 7 persons in comfort.
-They are bread & butter for many taxis. They have proven their reliability in all direction of India.
-Yes, Japanese took inspiration from VW, as usual they make it smaller.
-They have a good resale value. |

yes it is astonishing, the similarity... and moreover, the new versions went in exactly the same direction as T3 > T4 with the development of the BIG NOSE (which I don't like).
is it actually proven that the Japanese took their inspiration directly from T3s and T4s? ...or is this just the obvious assumptions.
PS- funny to say "welcome back" when in fact that whole time I was just a few hours train from you! hahaha _________________ www.edwardpowell.com

yeah the coolest thing over there is that all these machine shops are just there open to the street - you can just poke your nose in and watch everything -- and they are all so friendly, you can hang and chat for hours
you're never lonely in India.
BTW most of their machining machines are from Denmark. Big big old things...
They were working mostly one old 6 cylinder diesels for buses and small trucks - but they said business is down because mostly people want to buy newer trucks these days. _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

You are correct, non-VW pictures are deleted from the Gallery. Feel free to host the photos elsewhere and edit your post with the new links. |

Those things are monster trucks compared to the micro vans that actually started that segment 50 years ago. There was once a classification just for those autos in Japan that limited the engine to 360cc. I view those rigs as standard evolution that preceded VW's influence by years. I'll bet a donut VW copied the far east for the T4 look. _________________

So it seems in fact it might have been the Germans who got inspired by the Japanese to shift from the round Bay Window design to the boxy Vanagon design. In fact... looking at this article it become obvious - _________________ www.edwardpowell.com |

I doubt the Germans "copied" anything - when the Vanagon came out the Golf was already in production and the Jetta was launched the same year. All of them share the same design lines - square angles, straight lines box-like volumes. The 80's were coming and everybody in the industry embraced the square and boxy automotive design, including Volkswagen. _________________ 1965 Sunroof Beetle
