My '12 golf 2.5 5 cylinder, 5 spd. takes forever to un rev between shifts causing rather elongated shift intervals. My local service manager suggested that it's normal due to a heavy fly wheel. I think there's more to it than that, because if it's rev'd to 4,000 (and beyond) it lingers at the top for a split and then drops off pretty normally. Not always practical to rev to 4 grand when your just motoring around town. Any thoughts out there?

I hate asshole service writers/managers that try to convince people that something like that is normal. That is not normal or caused by a "heavy flywheel". It sounds like the valve body or transmission speed sensor or possibly even incorrect fluid or fluid level. Whichever the case, you need to climb up someone's ass until they make it right before its out of warranty if it isn't already. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

A search on the vortex seems to indicate the "rev hang" is a "normal" condition with these. Prolly has something to do with how the DBW is programmed, as a few post say that after an aftermarket tune is put on the ecu, the "rev hang" issue is gone. |

Thanks guys. An "aftermarket" tune. Meaning a "tuning" shop? Probably should wait till it's out of warranty else risk voiding the warranty.

Basically a reflash of the ecu. It is quite a bit of coin to fix a small annoyance. If there is not a dealer near you, they'll have you remove the ecu and send it to them, then you just re-install it and voila, all fixed and maybe a few extra hp, but not sure if it is then a "premium fuel only" tune or not. Best to check with which ever tuner you might use.
This is not something the average "tuning shop" can do, there are a handful of tuning companies and their dealers. |

It's hard to say without experiencing it, I know the ecm is programmed to slowly close the throttle after you let up on the pedal; this is an emissions thing. It's why the aircooleds got the throttle positioner or a dashpot to prevent the throttle from snapping closed. If it is excessively long, the throttle adaptation values may be off. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.

I'd have to call it excessive. As I say, rev to 4 and all is fine. If not, hmmmmm mmmmm between 5 and 10 seconds before the revs drop enough to engage the next gear without scuffing the friction plate. 42 thousand miles and I can tell there's not much left. I've pretty much driven exclusively manual transmission cars (I'm 66) and I have never worn out a clutch.

Sorry, I read that wrong, I thought you were having issues with an automatic. They do have a rather heavy flywheel to reduce some of the 5 cylinder harmonics. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

It definitely is excessive.
I looked into the issue of rev hang at some length and published my findings /URL here. |
