I have a 57 beetle and went to replace my shifter bushing.....
But I ran into a shift rod hangar that doesnt accept the standard shift rod bushing.
Did the 57 have a different shift rod hangar? |

Yes. It's all metal, put some grease on it. If it's worn through then you'll need to replace the whole bracket with the later style as the superior early ones are no longer available. |

Hi, sorry to drag up an old post.
I've mainly worked on later Beetles and when I found that bracket in the chassis wouldn't accept a plastic bushing I looked here for expert help.
Reading the posts in this thread made me aware that my 1956 doesn't need a bush. Looking at online VW shops they all list the same bush for 1950 - 1979, very confusing.
As a side note if your car does have a plastic bushing a drop of STP or even motor oil squirted down the rear gearstick hole will lube shift bushing.
Cheers Steve |

The later style that accepts the nylon bushing fits the earlier cars. It is just an updated part. Pretty standard practice with air cooled VWs since they didn't totally redesign the car every few years. _________________ Chris

read that thread for the procedure for replacing the hanger. There is no reason to cut a hole in the tunnel. The Bentley manuals also cover the procedure. _________________ Chris
