That piece looks like a chunk of magnesium case material from under the #4 cylinder spigot. There are several raised lobes like that surrounding #4.

It looks "most" like the bump beside one of the head studs, so it could indicate a loose stud insert. Here's a photo of one of my old crankcases, with the suspected bump circled in red:

Well that head bolt may be loose, if that is where it came from there may be cracks. Hopefully not, at this time the parts are not going to jump between something and destroy your engine. They would be in the sump. But can warp a head, first sign is compression loss.

We still don't know for sure were it came from, but torquing the head bolts will tell. Will also make matters worse if there is a crack. Creepy, 6 of 1, half dozen of the other.

Neil, I think you pegged it. That's a perfect match!

I looks like it made contact with something, looks pretty gouged in the first pic.

Amazing what these engines can take. Many years ago I was racing a class 10 buggy, unlimited 1200 2 seater. A guy in the same class broke a rod, #1 or 3, I don't remember but what I do remember is it blew a GIANT HOLE in the top of the case, and he finished the race like that. Drove it probably 20 miles at race speed. He fired it up in the pits afterward and we all sat there and watched the pieces go round and round!

One buddy suggests throw it back together and get what I am out of it performance wise. And other says while the jugs are jiggling crack it and go crazy!it had mismatched heads so was thinking of using these heads
