Fellas,
looking at buying a 71 Square, decent car but needs a wiring harness. Has anyone ever changed a harness in one? How difficult?
Thanks for any info!

the guys said someone had put a unregulated alternator on it and it melted the wires. And then also said something about the turn signals not working. |

It's not that hard to do, but you should be aware that for 71, there were 2 different models of wiring harness. One is the mid 71 and earlier style that the rear half ran on the outside of the body after the Voltage Regulator, and the mid 71 thru 73 style that ran under the rear seat to the engine compartment after the Voltage Regulator. That 2nd version also got the "test" system built into it, versus the early 71 style not having the "test" system.
However, neither harness is available new, only NOS, or used. There are new replacement harnesses available, but they are for carb cars, and would need some wires addded for the FI system (if the car still has it).
I hope this helps. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Any way to tell when my car was made via the VIN? I bought a complete replacement main harness when I had my 70 fasty and now have my 71 fasty and plan on replacing it when I install my new engine
I am thinking I have the mid-early harness since my harness comes into the engine compartment where the FI ECU is located...??

I don't know the VIN of the change, but I believe it was Febuary or March when it happened. I've got a mid January car here, and it still used the ëarly" style harness, while Jim Adney has an April built 71 that uses the "late" style. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Right on...I will look further this coming Monday when I pull the engine from my fasty and clean up the engine compartment. I am not sure I will have the patience to install the new harness prior to getting my engine running/broke-in but I will definitely be tackling this job in the next couple months.
Thanks again for that tidbit of info. _________________ 1971 Fastback Build

And just to confuse things a little more, the Bentley wiring diagram says the change occurred in May 1971 (see bottom of picture):

The test circuit had nothing to do with FI. It was an attempt to mitigate the increasing cost of maintenance labor at the dealers. The idea was to plug in (charging the customer for the diagnosis), and then the computer would tell you what needs fixing. Nobody has the dealer equipment anymore, so today it's just more wires to fail/short/corrode. |
