Flyboy, I've got some scrap 16 gauge(thickness of lip) and some scrape the same thickness as the pans. I'll weld them like I'll do the floors and post pictures at different wire speeds. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Here it is. Center is what the machine suggests, left is a little less and right is what I use.

I put the cross brace on the chassis and weld thru primered it. I'll continue tommorow, as it's getting dark. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

One side in, I'll "finish it" tommorow. I still have to grind the welds and put a few more in.

Wow... I don't know how I missed your post for a week flyboy. I'll do that tomorrow while I'm doing the other pan. I still have half a can of jasco acetone from my paint removal attempt. _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Use a narrow paint brush to really push the seam sealer in and smooth it out |
ct, if you find that the paint brush bristles bend too much to push the seam sealer, simply cut them to about half length. Then you have stiffer bristles.Once you have the sealer applied to the areas needed, finish off with long strokes applied lightly to the top of the sealer. |

Big news guys!!!!! The floors are in! I'm cleaning them up tomorrow, and I'll deal them. I bought two things of DAP and two chip brushes. Whoever said it was better to not weld the support to the pans was right I had to take it off and redo it. Here are a few pics, I did a little tagging too

Thanks! Next are the channels. Then I can get it back into one piece. Then it's just fender bolts and aprons. I found a set of '67 fenders in NY, but one has a dent in it along the edge. They're also $150. Maybe this car will be painted in December... _________________ '67 Beetle L41

$150 for the pair? That's a deal any day. Dent or no dent. Nice find. I have a drivers side that I got a year or so back and it was crushed. I took a little time and slowly worked on the damage. It's ok, not perfect. But "Rusty" is not gonna care. She'll be happy just to be on the on street again, someday.
Keep up the great work on your 67. I'll be watching for updates. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Why does this happen!!!!!!! There is an at least 3/4 inch gap between the front of the channels and the pan! Any ideas? _________________ '67 Beetle L41

Looking good. Something that helped me get through the nightmare of welding and rust repair was going to my local metal supply store and buying my steel in the scrap steel bins. Usually places that sell metal have lots of pieces of scrap that are left over from larger sheets that the cut for other companies. I was able to pick up lots of different gauges of sheet steel. I learned that when doing rust repair sometimes your only option is to make your own replacement panels. Even WW and cip panels just didn't fit correctly. a lot of the time I also picked up an electric disc cutter (forget what they're called) and a metal bender at harbor freight for cheap. You can make your panels with a little measuring/trial and error and they are just as good if not better than store bought pieces. And cheaper!!
Sometimes you just have to either pony up some cash to have someone else do something for you, or conjure up some ingenuity and creativity!
Best of luck to you. As for the pan gap. I had a similar issue once I replaced the heater channels. I think 3/4" would be alright. As long as it snugs up tight. Slide a jack under the lip of your pan and help it up before you torque the bolts. Better to let the jack do the initial lifting and let all the bolts share the load. Look closely at that gap first though, my issue was caused by the new jack points I welded on and a slight bit of grinding is all I needed. Your pan might be hung up on something. Hope that helps |

There are a few metal places around here, so I might go check them out Friday. On the pan gap though, I don't think I understand. My problem is that my pan is in the correct spot yet my channel lifts in the front.
When I took this, the channel was bolted down everywhere except up front because of this gap. I don't understand what you do with the jack. Currently I don't have the jack points welded on. I'm waiting to see if I can find a gas welder as my flux core blew a half inch hole from tacking _________________ '67 Beetle L41
