If it's only the tray section, just buy a replacement rear 1/4 pan, cut, and weld it in. You can get the pan from The Thing Shop, among others.

Cut out the old and weld in the new!!

(Never done it, but that's what I've observed in other build threads!)😉

My battery tray is rusted through, but only in one pretty small area. Waaay smaller than buying and shipping a quarter pan.

Does the commonly-available Beetle battery tray fit in there relatively closely?

I'm thinking of trimming a piece of metal and just welding it in, but if the Beetle ones fit, I'll spend $20 on it and have it look closer.

A beetle patch should work. I believe the pans don't get too different until the front foot well area(comparing bug to Thing/Ghia)..

Is it this bad this is what the last Thing we restored looked like I think it has been repaired a few times

No, not that bad. But the left side of the battery is poking through the pan! Shocked So the hole does need patched for sure.
