I've been into VWs along time….Ghias more than all. I just read about this for the first time. Shocked

Reminds me a lot of a Hot Wheels model from that time period - The Jack Rabbit Special - which was rear engined.

The design later 'evolved' into the Italdesign Cheetah, based on a T1 Beetle platform.
