Hello everyone! This is my first post but I've been checking out the forums and found a number of parts on the Samba classifieds.

I am working on a 40hp engine for a baja project that I picked up last summer. The plan is to make it a 1385.

The case I have is a 1964. On the top of the case, there's two stamps with a circled P. I've read about the P stamp on cases but not in this style or on this part of the case.

Anybody have an idea of what it means?

If you're read about the P-stamp, I'm guessing it included comments from myself. However I've never seen one like that before. Really, if VW stamped it, it's supposed to mean they "planed" the case halves prior to line-boring, and that included cutting cam bearing shells even if the case didn't have them before. So I'd look and see if the case has cam bearing shells.

I do not know how to fix this. All I can say is it all works fine for me with what I use, Firefox.

Thanks for the info. When I got the car, the engine was already in pieces so there were no bearings in the case (main or cam). Is there a way to tell if the case has been cut for cam bearings?

If it was properly cut for cam bearings, you'll see the little notches for the bearing shells to lock into.
