I went to my shop and fixed my BMW that needed attention because it gets me to and from work, grabbed my 36mm socket for the flywheel and then headed home with the intentions of just trying to pop the flywheel nut off. I got home and realized my socket is 3/8 and my impact is 1/2 so that go nowhere but the beers were going down easy so I thought I would pull and inspect the tin. The passenger side has a gap between the "doghouse" and the upper cylinder head shroud that appears to have been formed when someone welded the cylinder head piece back together but made it shorter in the process in the area where in interfaces with the doghouse.
While inspecting the fan as instructed I have found some play in the generator that I can't wrap my head around. If you grab the fan with one hand and the generator pulley with the other and turn them in opposite directions there is play. Can someone shed some light on this? There appears to be a very slight amount of "run out" in the fan itself also.
Everything else, at least to me looked ok on the tin aside from missing a few screws here and there but I have extras. There was no foam around the oil cooler so I will add that when it goes back together, after I put new seals in. Hopefully I can pop the engine back in and drive it to my shop where I have a lift and other awesome things like bright lights, air tools, my welder etc. Pics to come. |

Try tightening the pulley nut till at least snug and see if the slop goes away. Might be the woodruff key needs to be replaced. Front to back movement might mean you are missing a spacer in the gen.
So how wide is the cooling fan inside measurement?
Household door foam rubber tape you can get from most any hardware store will seal the shroud to the cooler and seal up the DH exhaust tins to the shroud. _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I didn't measure the fan, I even had a tape measure for that purpose and forgot. Ill get to it.
I gathered tools from the shop to get the flywheel off
The 1/2 impact made short work of taking the bolt off
With the shims that were on there I have about .007 end play, I have some more shims in a box in my shed that I cleaned but my caliper was dead so I called it a night. |

One of the flywheel shims was thrashed so I decided to strip the rest of the tin off the motor and have it rebuilt.
In the meantime I took the pickup to the shop where I have my lift so I could really dig around and make a mental list of things I need to do/ buy. The entire shifter is a mess, rear coupler bolts were loose. Gas pedal L bar thing is super loose, bracket is bent that it attaches to. Brake master looks crusty, hard lines look fine but I will probably replace them any way along with the rubber ones just for peace of mind. You can turn the steering wheel about 90 degrees before it moves the wheels so I suspect the box needs adjusted. Link pins are a mess of grease and road grime. Luckily though this truck is super dry, a little crispy on the lower rockers, battery tray and inner and outer lower nose sections. I'll let the pictures do the talking.
I've decided I'm going to lower it, I bought a 68 bug trans/ long axles and I will start accumulating parts for the straight axle swap in the next couple of weeks.

Sounds like a lot of play from just a badly adjusted steering box. Did you check the steering idler pin (centre pin)? _________________ Andy

I'll admit I was exaggerating a bit but its probably a combination of everything in the front end just being neglected for so long. Since I'm putting another beam in it I'll save the center pin replacement and subsequent reaming for someone else to do, whoever I end up buying the beam from in other words. |

Pulled the trans from the bus and set up the 68 trans on my jack so I can get to work.
Bought a new nose cone and hockey stick from WW and installed:
Painted my new spring plates with POR chassis coat
That's all for now, more updates tomorrow when it's back on the ground!

Got the rear done, need to finish plumbing the brake lines and hooking the new clutch cable back up.
Got the wrong axle nut, the notches on this one don't go deep enough to get the pin in. I think i ordered it for a 68 bug instead of a 36mm bus nut. Anyone run into this?

The nuts were from WW, I'll just find a good used pair I guess. The bearings and everything else went together fine. |

Off of one of Gregs busses at Vintage Warehouse. He agreed it's probably just the style nut I got, which makes sense because it has that "shoulder" on it whereas the old one did not if I remember correctly.

Thanks guys!! I got lazy and stopped updating this thread. I have a few other projects I've taken on but not before getting old Gertrude here back on the road!! This is without a doubt, the most fun thing to drive that I've ever owned. Put about 250 miles or so on her, all is well. Rides super tight, just a joy to drive. I have an order of funky green coming in, mostly rocker/ battery tray pieces. Once I tackle those areas I will move to the nose then its time for a cheap-o rattle can job of velvet green I'll have mixed locally and I'll be content for a long time. Nothing fancy, it takes the joy out of driving an old car when they are too pretty.
Here's some pics:
