This is how the project started out in 2010
we bought a solid 67er T2A with the idea to just clean the bottom and interior.
So after some dismatling the T2A was transported to a friend with a sandblasting company for a quick blast of bottom and floor of interiour.
One month later I got a phonecall: hey dude, I have slightly modified your plans, come and see what we have done to it......
WTF?? loadingfloor completely removed and bus was stripped
That decision of his, completely changed my plans........ _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!

Ans so it happened that this went from a quick update to a long time project in which the project turned different ways.
From a rebuild with a 1641 engine we changed our plans to create the ultimate holiday T2A. So the 1641 got pulled out and a 914 2.0 engine with dual webers was our next best option. For drivability we found a 5-speed gearbox from an early 911.
fits like a glove (after modifying the bracket 3 times)
ready for installation after the T3 motorhatch is welded in.
since from behind we plan to have som more umpf, we also needed some more stoppingpower and if possible an upgraded steering/suspension system.
With this red9 front end conversion, I guess we are there!
The set was a completely easy bolt-on, me happy!

When I find it in the boxes of parts I'll post a picture.
(Was removed prior to stripping)
Why are you interested in the M-plate? _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!

Lol sounds a little like my project. Went from "I'll just reinforce the floor board, paint a little and drive it." To "replace the bottom 8" inside and out then full paint job and rewiring..." Oh well. It'll be nice when it's done. Yours looks much nicer than mine. Lol keep it coming _________________ Brutis Patches Izabich: 1970 VW Transporter - 1776cc DP

Since my wiring harness had enough room for improvement, I have decided to replace it completely and vwlooms.com has created a new loom with some additional wires for measurementsignals from enginebay _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!

Nice project!
I have a soft spot fo early bays, especially '68. My brother bought one in '74, and I got hooked ! Not sure of the production date, etc. Back then, it wasn't a thought, like hitting the beach, surf trips, with the singlefins, held on the roof with Aloha surf racks, and the 8 track/ stereo crankin, was !
Life was simpler then.
Looking forward to seeing more on this!
Nice "rack" !

if its a 67, the production number better be above 38 though.
I dig the red9 so much. I respect that people use it for lowering, but using it for lifting would be soooo rad. _________________ Wash your hands

I don't have the documentation with me since I am traveling at this moment (that's why I have time to create the build-topic), what I can find online is that the first registration-date is November 21 1967.
Humzzz, never thought about using the Red9 for lifting, but when it's finished I'll probably try all options
Since this is my first bay, is there somewhere an overview of all specifics for this early model? _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!

yea, there is a topic somewhere of '68 on pearts. biggest issue you hit with that is windshield wipers, door handles, rear view mirror, drum brakes and other small shit. _________________ Wash your hands

Manufacturing for the 1968 model year began Aug 1967.
So anything built between Aug of 67 to July of 68 would be a 1968.
Good luck

OK, so that tells us that it is a 1968 model, and was bus #36,465 on the assembly line. That all seems legit. _________________ John

Purists avert your eyes, I've been cutting a large hole in my bus.....
Now I can install a T3 motorhatch, this in order to be able to have easy access to the 914 engine. _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!

I'd do it too if I put a Type 4 engine in an early bay. Hacks are only hacks when they're not done well. The rest is up to you.

yeah, some more hacking and welding done last weekend.
Motorhatch is done!
After this we positioned the Beetle-BRITAX ragtop and based from these measurement we replaced the roofbeam to make place for ragtop.
The picture looks odd, but it's nicely lined in the middle of the roof, distances from the front is kept equal to sides........
The innerframe is already positioned and glued to the roof, so it can harden this week, next weekend: last bits of grinding and welding _________________ 54 iceland green oval, done!
