I recently picked up some girling calipers from a 74 ghia to do a disc swap to my bug.Did a little searching and I guess they're really kind of a pain.My question is they take the oval style pads and do they need to be split in half to change the pads out?The pads seem to be much thicker than the slot

Are you sure you have the pistons pushed in all the way?

No honestly I haven't really messed with them a whole lot.I'm waiting on a rebuild kit.I'm just not familiar with these calipers and don't see how to remove the discs without splitting them because the disc is wider than the slot

It's been a while since I've messed with these, but I think the pads slip out the other side once you pull the pins. That way you can change the pads with out pulling the caliper off the rotor (theoretically).

You should not need to split the caliper to remove the pads and you shouldn't have to move the pads into to slot where the disc goes - there should be enough space at the ends to wiggle them out so if there isn't, maybe these are not the correct pads? Good call on the caliper rebuild kits, they look a little crusty.

Rotate the pads 90 degrees, the extra room from the flat side of the pads will let you slide them out.

speaking from experience...toss those in the trash. Pads are hard to find and they still make noise all the time..... go with a 2 pin setup at least. The girling pads are held in only by the spring and not the single pin. No matter how much anti squeel.

Just my .02$

Update>parts are definitely hard to find.I got a rebuild kit and new pads from ebay because they are nla at my local import parts store or the bigger chains. These seem to be kinda the orphans .Anyhow after reading everything I found on here I filed the edges off the pads ,lots of goo on the backs and let it dry and greasing to edges I'm not getting any sqeal so far.Maybe I did something right. One thing I did find is the metal shims that go behind the pads have an arrow stamped in them.I couldn't find any info so i assumed thet were for the direction of wheel travel so that edge contacts first so that's how I installed them.Next time I will look for the 2 pin ATe calipers just for parts availability
