Before top end tear down, compression was 125 on 1&2 cylinders. The cylinder head was nice and snug, though the push rod tubes were oozing oil. Now for the issues with compression, specifically on the 3&4 cylinders I believe is because the cylinder head was essentially finger tight, and the amount of oil coming from behind the cylinder and case was exponential.
Though compression on this side was 115 and 90. Also it smoked that a BBQ pit, so we decided to drop it out and button it up. I wanted to reuse the original pistons and jugs, but for a $150 with rings, where rings alone were going to cost $40, we bought in. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Duh!
Thanks Sharp.
Today's stopping point. Dad's ordering an exhaust, and a oil breather tube boot and we'll be closing up the engine. Moving to fixing wiring issue from starter to generator, new firewall installed, and it's time to bring the motor back home to the bug.

I see you installed a degree wheel. on the reverse engine side does it have the reverse screw built into it? This reverse screw is what pulls outside air into the crankcase for proper crankcase ventilation of harmful vapors containing water and sulfuric acid and unburned fuel in the form of blowby gasses. This reverse screw is vital to longevity of the engine;

Dansk exhaust came in today, along with the needed oil boot. Tomorrow afternoon will be able to mount exhaust, hook up heat exchangers, the rest of the engine tin, bolt down the intake, place on the carburetor and step back and smile.
I really hope that this motor stands tall for my pop, he's excited and I'm excited for him, every hard working man deserves an escape from the grind.
Pics to follow, happy cruising everyone. _________________ The Bus Barn Ltd. Co.

Might be confusing as that's the wiring diagram for a T2 isn't it.
This is for a beetle:

Thought I should jump in here. With all the talk about loose tarboards in the engine compartment and the possibility of pieces suck into the fan, there's one thing you can do. On the firewall there are a number of pointy little metal tabs that were pushed through the tarboard and bent over at the factory. It's real easy when you replace the boards to just ignore the tabs but they actually hold the board securely to the metal. A little bit of a hassle to fuss them through but worth it. Just my 2 cents. Project is looking awesome !! |
