I bought this car off Ian Strack, some of you may know him, if not, you should! Awesome guy and very knowledgeable. It was a sight unseen eBay purchase but overall I'm very happy with the deal. The Car is quite complete, some parts have been pulled from other cars but they all seem to have come from other Military things (except the top). This was one of the 50 cars Ian's boss imported from Germany in the mid-late 90's and I'm in the process of getting a birth certificate now. I have taken a lot of pictures of the Military specific stuff. The Engine has me boggled, German car with a "made in Mexico" case . It has the bash guard under the pully section, and the H1 code matches up to the era. It also has a weird logo with arrows circling around the VW emblem. Any help on this topic would be great.
Now on to the pics.

Very, very nice vehicle ! I remember when these were imported, however, my four car garage that I had at the time was full, with a 1968 Bug, 1974 Super, and a 1985 Citroen 2CV6.
If your time permits, could you post pictures with the dimensions of the two decals on the windshield ? If I could get them reproduced, they would look great on my car. |

Thank you ente_kaefer! I absolutely will! And I would be willing to purchase some stickers from you once you get them made. My windshield is cracked and I'm very upset I will be loosing my logoed glass and those stickers.

That is one cool car- I bought the civy model 74 and it is so generic compared to that one- did they run 12vts there? my jeep was some odd volts and didn't keep it long as the starter was like $400.
Hope you keep posting- That "H" block is an exchange motor that was a blank and restamped by the dealer to match what ever it was replacing. _________________ some days I get up and just sit and think. Some days I just sit.

Yes, I believe its 12v. On the fan shroud, you can slightly see a 12v marking above the generator.

Is that what the arrows mean around the emblem? I also have that logo on the transmission.

I can understand that, my hobby takes a backseat too:
2.5 yr old
15 month old
Next one due 7/19
I have to negotiate for time in the garage. |

What a great car! Cgs!
Looks like one 181 with the camuflage paint that the NATO ordered in the 80's...
At front, in the luggage area, do you have also the grey sticker with the NATO reference for the car? _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

The Paint job is quite rough, looks brushed on. It quite possibly could have been done in the 80's to match others in the fleet.

About the paint, they were simple hand painted with the camuflage scheme. I found somewere on the net a design with the numbers of the coulors and the "look" that the cars must have. Even the hood was painted.
About the sticker, shoul be grey... with more numbers, like all NATO parts have...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NATO_Stock_Number
The stock numbers of the military 181s, that I now that are in they manuals, are two... one for normal personal transport, and other for military police.
Will look at home, at might, for that information.

About the NATO sticker...
This are photos from a 181 of a friend:
This reference is for the "personal" one, not the Military Police. The last digits are diferent.
He also have the small plate, that I read somewere that is some kind of code from the fabric date...
Mine have arrived to me to much "civilized"... dont have none of them... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |
