It does, its missing a few pieces, but the majority is there. I will look for the stickers tonight, I just got back in town and haven't had much time to do anything. |

No sticker under my hood.
I looked for an outline thinking it may have been painted over, but no luck. |

I have allready seen one on the net with the number painted...
I'm trying to restore mine to original condition... with all the military parts and configuration, but sometimes is dificult to find them... and ones are the stickers...
Should be on the left side a "12V" one (the same as the beetles...
http://www.justkampers.com/12-volt-door-pillar-sticker-for-vw-beetle-1967-1998.html
The gear levels on the center dash (again the same as the beetle), the tire pressures (beetle) and pressure of the water thank to the windshiled (beetle)... but the ones like this one, the ones for the cars with antenna, the speed limit... very rare and dificult, even replicas... _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=538182 |

In the pictures of underneath is that a swing axle trans? If so how level does it sit? I've got a redux box trans and hadn't ever thought about using it in a thing but I'd imagine it would make for a lot more off road capabilities. |

Yes it is, and it sits quite level, if anything the front is up a tad. You can slightly see the difference in the pic below. I'm not sure if the front suspension is any different form civilian models.
I don't think it would be too hard to swap transmissions, it seems all you would need is the longer spring plates (and the RGB trans, of course ) and possibly your nose cone off the original trans.

Very nice car.
These early German built 181s have reduction gears at the back and you need also beetle spring plates to eliminate them...Check the transmission code , AK is non LSD and if you are lucky AL is with the ZF LSD , both are K 8/31 R&P...If you like to remove the reduction gears from your transmission you also have to flip the diff...

Thank you Jim.
My Transmission code is AK. It was a bit of a let down as Ian thought is was the AL model.

Going to restore? |
I'm not 100% sure. I sent off for the birth certificate, so I'm curious to see how that pans out. I told myself I would never make another car pretty after doing a Bus, but if there is a car that would change my mind, it may be this one. |

Hmm seems that you dont have an ZF LSD , BUT the stamp before the transmission code indicates that you have a factory rebuilt unit !

Thank you for clarifying that! My motor has the same markings and it was throwing me for a loop as I have never come across them before. Come to think of it the marking is on my starter too.

Got the water tight ignition in the mail just recently. I have been doing a lot of searches for the wiring schematics for these and have had no luck. Does anyone know how these are wired up? Those 2 xtra components hanging off the distributor are quite foreign to me.

I think you NEED to spend more time in the garage LOL _________________ Remember, as you travel the highway of life,

First of all, its not water tight, just RF shield.
you can avoid the bottom cilinder (its just a rf filter) and connect the plugs to the dizzy as usual.
Just be aware that normally the coil has no internal resistance, so an external one should be used. Or replace the coil. _________________ Aug '58 pressed bumper SO23

Wow! that is a good looking car! Very complete!
Sorry for lack of updates, I have been quite busy with other things.
I came home to this on Monday, so now its a mad dash to make the car at least look finished.
