I had the opportunity this past weekend to compare my 1973 Thing to a 1945 Kubelwagen, one does not appreciate how much the Type 82 influenced the design of the Type 181 until you can pull the two cars together, side by side, and compare.

It could have influenced the shovel-nosed Porsche too. Laughing

Yes but I heard somewhere that no parts will interchange. Thought it was interesting...

I did see the exact same glove box light (actually several of them) inside the turret of a Tiger tank at the Imperial War Museum many years ago.

The hood is raised on the Thing to give us more trunk space, but it makes it even more ugly than the Kübelwagen.

It was interesting to compare the engine compartments of the two vehicles, here is the 1945 Kubelwagen. I like how the jack is stored to the left, and the starting handle and air pump are attached to the rear deck lid, and the wood toolbox strapped to the right. Note voltage regulator on top of generator.

The exhaust is the same type as used on the Thing from 1968 to 1973.

The hole for the starting handle is located about where it would be on a Thing.

The fan shroud is the same without ducts for the heater boxes.

Note also the tube going to the air filter from the vents above the rear deck lid.

Interesting ! The only part I believe the two cars have in common are the lug bolts.
