The latest photo highlights the one difference I see... the clutch and brake pedal slots are parallel in the first photos, but angled in those immediately above. My OG are angled as well.
Looking more closely, I think I see the cut VW put between the two pedal slots in the top photos, which make it for an automatic. Still probably OG but not for a stick like the rest of the photos shown. |
Good eye KTPhil!! I think you are 100% correct. Clatter's piece must be for an automatic. My carpet is just like Everett's manual in his photos.
Another thing that is on the bacl of this carpet is some small patches of what appear to be the fuzzy half of Velcro sewn into a few spots on the outer edges of the rear half. I don't know what that's all about since I don't think Velcro was around before the space program. I don't remember seeing it until the late 70s in the consumer world, but I could be wrong. . . _________________ Regards,

The Velcro was there from the beginning. It was put on the corners and sewn in. It didn't work all that well, since debris tends to clog up the hooks and so it stopped working well. |

I am not sure the hole for the shifter isn't also different for automatics. |

Velcro was patented in 1955, so I suppose it could be factory. Mine has Velcro also, but I don't know if it's original, so I had not previously included pics.
Phil is correct, the parallel slots are for an automatic's brake pedal:
And the shifter hole:

...and the lack of a slot would make getting it over the auto brake pedal... interesting! |

My carpets are original, and in decent (though work and in some places, torn) shape. I'm not sure it would make a good template, though, because it has probably shrunk some over the years.
But if this project is not in a hurry, next rime I have the seats and carpet out, I could trace a template and take some close-up pictures, front and back.
I am not sure what changed over the years, but heater duct areas did change. Mine is an early '71 stick. |
