I've got a rare, very nice low mile gauge set from a "mk1 sport truck"with the factory(gas)tach on the right side. How much modification would it be to have tach operational on a 1.6 diesel mk1 truck?

The gas tach is driven via coil(-), how is the diesel tach driven, is it mechanical?

I believe the alternator needs a W terminal for it to work . Show us a picture of the back of alternator.

Yes, I have a W terminal and presently have an aftermarket mini tach. It reads very inaccurately, main issue is when an electrical load, like lights on, the tach drops dramatically.
I wonder what if anything is needed to plug in the gassier unit??

That's intriguing -I've been wondering about swapping a later cluster w/ tach myself, like from a Cabriolet or something. Definitely keep us posted if you get it to work.

look up the info on how to convert a gti tach into a diesel tach... for a caddy... then you will have a idea of the parts needed to be swapped.. aka to resolder the pcb of the tach
