i found some clear filters with metal ends in the high performance section of O'Reiley. But, the explicitly state on the back of package, not to use with FI.

If you mean the glass type, those should not be exposed to high pressure. Nor are they necessarily good at a vacuum. I had those on the carb of my old '67 and they leaked often.
If you are using a filter from the tank to the pump inlet, it will never see any significant pressure-- at most return pressure from the injector loop. The main concern is that it has enough area to not clog quickly.
Equivalents to the stock 311 133 511 C filter include this metal type:

I have that one. I have no sock filter in my tank, so I need an in-line large particle strainer. This would come before the standard filter (the one you provided a photo of in last reply). See previous replies on this thread. _________________ T-roy

Just get a solid steel filter, like in the picture. Mount it between the tank and the pump.
EDIT: I see you're wanting a strainer. You'll have to use your own judgement, remembering that it won't be under much pressure. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

So, the pressure is on just the output side of the pump, and not the inlet side. With that said, I can probably go with this one I saw. I thought differently. I thought the pump drew at 28 PSI, so the line between tank and pump would be at that psi. _________________ T-roy

The strainer is between the tank and primary fuel filter. Neither the strainer or the filter will see ANY pressure over atmospheric....ever. Ray |

new issue....I was flushing the tank again, and then looked up through the hole in the bottom of the tank and saw an obstruction. It appears the sock strainer is still in the tank. I believe this because i fed a 12 gauge wire up the hole, and it hit something after about 4 inches. I jammed at it until I could feel the wire busting through some fabric. I kept jamming around until I found no resistance anywhere. Then, started flushing the tank again. I have real good flow through the hole now. But, concerned about that sock strainer still in there.
Can I access the inside of the tank to get at it, through the fuel level gauge the sits on top of the engine (remove it, obviously)? _________________ T-roy

pulled the sending unit. Found the strainer sock laying in the tank. was able to retrieve it. put everything back together, with an in-line strainer, plus the normal filter. will fill it up tomorrow and try to start it. _________________ T-roy

I have it running with 28 psi at the "T". It won't idle well. Adjusted the idle screw, but doesn't correct issue. it won't increase in rpm.
When i pull back on the throttle (give it some gas), it roars to life and runs great. let off the gas, and struggles to stay running. oil bath cleaner cleaned and re-filled proper level. vacuum lines look in place and in good shape _________________ T-roy

Hoses can look good but still leak. Vacuum leaks are bad for the FI and also for the auto tranny. The combination of FI/auto can be an enjoyable car to drive, but it is VERY picky about vacuum leaks and timing, as well as valve adjustment. I would replace all vacuum lines just out of principle and then check the ignition timing (both setting and stability) and advance action. Then check the valves. |

what bugs me is it ran great one day. then, seemed like it became starved for fuel, and hasn't idled goood since. _________________ T-roy

Recheck the adjustment on your throttle valve switch. _________________ 71 Elm Green FI A/T Squareback |

Did you put a new filter on after the sock filter episode? Ray |

o.k. i need to slow down and prioritize next steps,
i did pull the old sock out of the tank and put an in-line strainer in place.
not sure best way to troubleshoot at this point.
If i have consistent 28 psi at the T, can i check off the fuel delivery (pump and lines) as o.k.?
What is that little black box that sits on top of engine, near back if engine, that has a vacuum line running to the air filter? i notice it has a cap on it, and when removed, looks like some fluid is to be in there? _________________ T-roy

Well, i checked and replaced all vacuum hoses. I put in new points, and reset gap and timing. Car will start. idles poorly and now when i hit the gas, it doesn't respond well.
About to start going through all the electronic components with a meter to see if anything is bad, unless someone can point me in some other direction.
Thanks

Are both distributor advances working? Is the timing mark steady when you time it with your timing light or does it jump around?
