|
|
We love our Weekender interior for so many reasons, but one thing we haven't quite figured out is the best storage solution for our 2 storage bins : 1 for our Camping Cookwear and 1 for our Dry Food. This is where we get a tad envious of the tidiness of the full camper cabinets.
The main concern here is the safety of our passengers in worst case scenarios if the bins go flying.
What have been some of your safe solutions? Any links to specific storage bins you prefer/like which you can safely tie down? Did you Scratch the bins and have a more semi-permanent cabinet of sorts (I have read all related threads of such)?
The flexibility of removal of the bins is excellent but looking for better, safer solutions. Would love to hear your ideas!
Here's our current setup:

It isn't as large, but I got a storage ottoman from Wal-Mart for like $15 and it gets buckled in to where the jump seat goes. It's just a black cloth covered square with a padded top. It's nice because it acts as a seat as well, stores more than you might think though certainly less than the bins you have pictured.

Yakima or Thule roof box?
My brother uses Mountain Smith Cubes in his van. Too tidy for my tastes though.

It looks like you've already eliminated the jumpseat which is a great strorage area about the size of one of your bins, beside giving you an extra seat. All of my kitchen gear plus my 1 burner propane stove and my group 24 extra battery fit under my jumpseat. I carry a plastic bin with food behind the rear seat when it is folded up along with my chairs and roll-up table. |

I would also look at strapping that fridge in better too. That handle will come off in an accident and the passengers could find the fridge in their legs or chest. |
Interesting. I hear the molded ARB handles are quite stout - crash rated to a certain degree. To latch fridge secure, I cobbled up some quick draws with 14,000 lbs tensile strength webbing that attach to eyelet latch points. I am pretty confident in it's security. |

thanks for this. We have these but use them for the kids toys and such.
I think throwing all the cookwear in a roof box is not the most convenient location. We generally remove the bins and place them outside and the Nylon fabric of the Cubes would get filthy quickly. |

Not a bad idea. we travel with 3 kiddos so most of the rear is already taken up by clothes bags and the like. I do have a removable rear seat (carat style) so it doesn't have the storage underneath. Not a bad option but I think we are best suited for a bin of sorts on the floor. |

thanks Rob.
Not a bad idea but likely too small for our needs... Thanks for the advice! |

Have one and love it. It fits perfectly behind the bench seat and holds a ton of stuff. _________________ Joe T.

If you have a later model van with the removable jump seats, I have an idea that has not come to fruition. Start with something like a hand truck. Remove the wheels and weld a bar across the bottom that has two pins which will engage the seat mounting boles on the floor of the van. Then, on the back side of the truck, weld on a bar that has a lock pin scavenged from a thrashed jump seat. When you go camping, snap in the hand truck and use it to stack bins on and strap them down to it. When you get home take the bins and truck out and snap in the seat. Just an idea I had for a storage bin and strap down system.

^^^ That's what I do (comfortably with 2 adults and 2 kids), but... since you said you already have a roof box that's full plus the bins... I'd suggest:
1. Pair down the amount of crap you carry.
2. Larger roof box than you currently own.
3. Rear hitch mounted cargo box. _________________ 1990 Multivan - "Ohana"

My plan for the future! Well without the wheels but i like that it could be mobile. _________________ VW LT40 build. Like a Vanagon but 30% larger in every direction and 40% slower even in metric.

With 3 kids in a Vanagon, you definitlely are a candidate for a small utility trailer.
As they grow, their stuff will grow too, like tricycles, bycycles, small watercraft etc. A trailer will be the only way to make that work. My friend had a small trailer made that would haul canoes and gear for his two boys as they got older. He hauled it behind his EV. A Vanagon could pull a light trailer even with a 2.1. |

I like this idea, this would better suit my style of camping.
One of those aluminum handtrucks with the fold flat wheels might be perfect.
If jumpseat brackets are unavailable you can make your own, better.
I made these brackets, been using them for years, they are very secure and give multiple achoring possibilities.
I use a modified landy jump seat here sometimes
...and no holes in the floor needed
