The Golf, Jetta, Beetle automatic transmissions are definitely the weak link, have someone that knows the cars do a pre-sale on it (a VW specialist, not a general repair shop). Make sure there are records for timing belt service (not that many of them make it to 120,000 without one). With that many miles on it & that age, ALL the plastic vacuum & coolant hoses are going to start failing & the vacuum hoses will be a constant check engine light trigger. Catalytic converter is another common thing & last but not least, remove the oil cap, if there is any chunky black crap flaking from the oil cap or noticeable build up in the engine, walk away. The 1.8t runs fairly hot & requires synthetic oil only. Most oil change places didn't use synthetic (nor did a lot of the dealers when doing the first few free services.) & compound that with the manufacturer suggested 7-10,000 mile service intervals, the oil breaks down & burns, sticking to the insides of the engine, much like frying oil in a pan. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.
GOFUNDYOURSELF, quit asking everyone to do it for you!
An air cooled VW will make you a hoarder.
Do something, anything, to your project every day, and you will eventually complete it. |
