Check out this 58 VW Bus I purchased last month from North Carolina!
I am working on getting it back on the road...

Maybe update your profile on the Control Panel to show your location... or say your location.
Metal/parts recommendations may be partially dependent on the info. _________________ aka: Evan

Good point!
I live in Florida, it appears shipping is pretty expensive when purchasing metal...
I do have a question to throw out there....
Has anyone had any experience with a flux core wire feed welder with metal panel replacement?
My research shows it may be a little messier than the Argon MIG set up... I assume there will be a little more grinding involved...

While it can work, it sucks.. Buy a welder with argon gas or gas mix, as it welds SSOO much nicer and cleaner. Buy the BEST welder you can afford as well. Miller being a good one.

Flux core can be used, but go for a gas mig welder. Much better welds. or better yet get a Tig.. |

Sweet find Dude! Get that motor moving, body flaws can be secondary! |
I hear that!
I am actually having a transmission and motor rebuilt as we speak!
It came with no running or installed motor.
It hasn't been on the road in over 20 years from what I was told...
Just looking to have some fun with it, get it running and driving and then work on the metal... The exact opposite way I should do it!
But this is the way I believe I will have more fun and can afford this route!

You can also cut and weld in each sheet metal piece over a weekend or two, and still drive it.
Agreed, get a really good welder with gas bottle, look into Lincoln or Miller.
Do be ready to someday sooner than later to strip off that paint to get rid of any rust and get a good quality new primer and paint on. Again that could be done section by section taking only a day or weekend each time. Most of all do beware of just sandblasting it, lot of volks have learned the hard way that if too much pressure is used you can warp the heck out of the metal.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Seems like a lot of work!
I am up for the challenge...
If I put it on a rotisserie and stripped it down to bare metal, bought all the replacement metal... I would get discouraged in a few months, not have enough room, wife would revolt, and not continue....
I would rather get it on the road, drive it around and work on it like you said over the weekends as I have time... |

been there done that
Shop craigslist for a good mig welder. A small 110v is fine for sheet metal work. Consider your local junior college for a welding class or body shop classes - they helped me a lot
As for the welder itself - Hobart, Lincoln, Miller are all good brands, but don't buy from your home depot. Craigslist a used one, or buy from a local welding shop. They will have better components inside and last longer. Ideally, you want infinite adjustability in wire feed AND amperage, instead of just an A, B, C D selector switch. _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |

Good point! For amperage our Hobart Handler only has a selector switch. Have made it work, but it would be a lot easier with infinite adjust ability.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

I totally agree with making it a runner before you tear it into a 1000 pieces that are scattered all through your house, garage, basement, etc..
So many threads have been started on this site where someone bought an old VW, was all gung ho, posted to their build thread daily and then got massively overwhelmed and disappeared. Some did come back and admit this and sold the project for a huge loss.
It's sad to see that when someone wanted a VW for years, bought one and took it all apart and then either worked on it for YEARS or sold it not completed. They never got to enjoy the VW at all.
I'd hate to know what the percentage is of folks who tear down a car for a full restoration and actually see it through.. I bet it's less than 10%. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]

Thanks for the info!
I purchased this 85 AMP Dual Purpose Wire Feed Century Welder on craigslist, I have been using Flux core with no gas for now.
It has a small nipple on the back of the welder... is this a Argon/Co2 Set-up option?
Here is a pic of the front of the welder I have...

it will work - but you will have a lot more to clean up and you will probably blow through the metal a lot.
20% duty cycle means, for every 2 minutes you are welding, you need to give it 8 minutes to cool off. Not great but maybe it will get you by for a while. keep your eye open for a hobart, lincoln, or miller gas mig on CL _________________ Stop dead photo links! Post your photos to The Samba Gallery! |
