The nose cone, gasket and curved release arm arrived next day air as promised. Now to decide which arm to bend which way. Have a fancy snap-on 17mm swivel, shouldn't take much. Thanks to all who replied and thanks to Greg for the good advice.

Is it just me or does that case look really pitted?

The side plates look corroded where they match up to the case too.

Maybe it doesn't matter as long as everything seals up?

I would definitely want a new nose cone at a minimum.

I was thinking the same thing Ev, that case looks like a road salt area case or one sitting out in rain and mud if so the inside is just as bad if not worse. and He was charged the core fee for a case and nose cone. sounds almost like they just wanted to trade cases with him and get rid of this one. and charge him for it.
3foldfolly, did you ever see a hole in your transmission case you sent in?

In all trannies I've seen I've never seen just a hole??? cracks, busted in half, and corrosion yes, but to get a hole from corrosion it would be so obvious you would never send it in to get rebuilt.
At this point I think I would force them for a complete replacement.

I thought the same thing. I would want my replacement case to be in better condition. Case corrosion looks similar to the nosecone like they have been together from the beginning.

Did you take a pic of your case numbers before shipping out.

I have thought lately about getting six big nut trannies I have laying around with various issues repaired. After reading this thread, frankly I am shocked that this even passed quality control. I have called a few places and received quotes as high as 2500. Time I learn these myself are my thoughts. Please keep us posted on the end result. I am surprised no signs of Curil T on this trans at the seams.

I'm trying to figure out what year and model this case is from.
It has serial # H7194416 stamped into the side. I couldn't locate that # in the technical section. Anyone know how to de-code this?

If you take that clutch lever arm off, just tack a new receiver on to it on the left side to line up with the Bowden cable. EZPZ

Finally got my bus reassembled and road worthy. All new WW trans mounts carefully installed per Bentley procedure. Upon driving I found this trans has a loud whine in 3rd and 4th gear, 1st and 2nd are relatively quiet. When in 3rd and 4th a heavy vibration almost grinding feel is felt in the shift lever and a howl is heard under load, loudest in 4th gear between 40-50 mph. Is this normal for reduction gear trans or do they gradually get louder in all gears as relation to vehicle speed?

No, for us at least with the 2 transporters the engine and road noise is much more noticeable. Got to ask, have you double checked the gear oil in the transaxle is still right at the fill plug level??

Might try inquiring with the shop on what they think about it. Maybe it will quiet down after a few hundred miles....

Nope, it's not "normal".

Not good.

Still there is something wrong.

Bad scene.

3foldfolly wrote:

If not under load is it ever quiet?

The simple answer would be ring and pinion but I think it's more than that but ring and pinion should not be doing it with a correct fresh setup.

I've had some drive trains that seemed to have louder reduction box whirr and almost a rhythm to them but usually just a sweet light whirr. Whirr pitch rises and falls with speed but not intensity.

Of course, as stuff starts to fail, you'll get new sounds. For example the double-taper pinion bearing failing sounds like water running in pipes in a house.

Just for kicks make sure your shift rod at the rear is not touching the body tube where it is supposed to float without touching.

Well a little update here. I removed the transaxle on an unusually warm day in late November and shipped it back to Rancho early December. They shipped back last week. Dave at Rancho said they replaced the ring and pinion gear due to a chip on the gears. I'm really curious of what I have now but it's too cold here to reinstall, waiting for another unusually warm weekend. I hope this story has a happy ending.

Had nice weather this weekend so I installed the trans and engine.Took it out for a road test and was relieved to find the noise was gone. Happy ending!
