Why not just leave the trans where it is and use a universal joint for the shift coupler? I have u iversals on both my street rail and Baja

Nice build. I have a street rail myself and love driving it around. Not sure if you need an engine or not but I have a rebuilt 1915 on Detroits craigslist also have some other parts not listed if you're interested hit me up. I sold my fiberglass project last week |

So I couldn't find much help on the interweb so I winged it...I just made the trans location similar to my swing axle buggy. I think it should work.
Cut off the mount and grinded it until it fit into location.
So obviously it has gaps to the frame. I added a top brace piece as well as little bracing pieces for the sides. I think it came out pretty decent.
And with the trans set in place I was able to get the engine back in. I even cranked it over and it fired right up on starting fluid. So hope to get it running soon and see what kind of shape its in.

I feel your pain. Did the cut and plug thing on the top bar. It used to follow the bottom bar but is now about 2" wider on each side towards the rear.

Can you tuck the fuel tank inside the frame? State Farm was very concerned about location of my tank BEFORE they insured the mt buggy.
Cool build. _________________ If I knew what I was doing; I wouldn't be building a buggy! |

Time for an update..
After getting the seats in I was looking right at the front hoop so I decided to chop it off and raise it. Added 2.5 inches.
I also picked up torsions off craigslist because 1 my arms didnt match, and 2 one was bent.... tires look much better now.
Made mounts for the gas tank.
Made seat belt mounts after getting these very nice PRP belts in..
Battery has to go in the front as there is no room to spare with these seats.
And finally got the pedals positioned as well as added some bracing over the aluminum floor.

Looks like good progress.
Nice job fitting the belt tabs...

BUT....(I know everybody HATES those... )
They SHOULD BE about a hand width farther forward on the frame rail so the lap belts pass over your hips, not try to ride up into your belly as they will mounted there. Famous NASCAR driver Fireball Roberts died from intestinal injuries from his lap belt being too high on his belly when he crashed. NASCAR's belt rules were changed shortly after once they realized what caused his death and how to fix it.
Even this gets the point right ONLY for a seat well above the floor...at a certain elevation. A seat closer to the floor where the belt mounts should have the belts mounted MUCH further forward than one where the seat is high up as shown here.
This here is wrong and dangerous:
Even the most common belt installation drawings get the angles right in the text, but the drawing itself shows the lap belt WAY too high on the driver's belly.
Ohhh...
One of the drawings above calls the belt passing down between the driver's legs an "anti-submarine" belt. If that were what would prevent a person from "submarining" under the lap belt...I don't think they'd care much one way or t'uther after. It's properly called a "crotch strap". It's purpose is to resist the pull of the shoulder straps and keep the lap belt down on the lap and not pulled up into the belly. It's NOT intended to slice through the driver. It's one of the changes that NASCAR made after Fireball Robert's death. _________________ Richard

Good info, it will be tough to get the inner mounts forward due to such tight clearance to the shift rod, but I will look it over.
Actually got it running/ driving last week. Drove around the block, actually fairly peppy for a worn out single port, definitely needs taller gears.
The engine poured out oil about as fast as you put it in....so I put some new pushrod tubes in and new valve cover gaskets. Fixed the majority of the leaks.
Also got started on the rear bump stops and shocks. I am running the arms flipped upside down so I refitted the the cut off stop buckets and drilled them for a bolt in bump stop.
I have the shock mounts cut out and ready to go but I'm waiting on the actual bump stops I will be running, the one in the pic is stolen from my jeep, but the same. I will actually be cutting them down some for most usable up travel. _________________ Buggy Build > http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=499786

I've seen posts of people running the IRS arms upside down, but I haven't understood why. Could you elaborate? Extra travel somehow? Lift? Camber? |

Rear shocks mounted up
I also pulled the trigger on a empi disk brake/ drop spindle setup. I was a little leery of using empi but I have to say im pretty impressed with the quality and fit, see how it holds up over time. I painted the spindles myself, will be doing the rotors as well.
It's definitely a tight fit, there was a little piece of weld slag on the wheels I had to grind off that was hitting.
