I'm buying a new zero-miles long block from CIP for my 74 SB Vert 1600 DP. Old engine crapped the bed, and I'm not confident in my internal engine building skills. The new long block should arrive in about a week (the wagon train has a tough time heading east over the Rockies), but I wanted to ask the Samba brain trust if you've had any experiences with new long blocks and if there are any possible problem areas I should be checking before installation back in the bug. I plan to check valve lash and flywheel end play, but I bow to y'all's experience on any other items that could REALLY ruin my day after installation. Thanks.

Change the engine oil 5 minutes after initial start up,again after the first test drive and again after 100 miles..getting the assembly debris out is important.

Add oil before starting, at least check, likely not added.

You've always given me good gouge, so please answer this one: One of the Youtube gurus. vwdarrin, recommends running a high-zinc, break-in oil on new builds. Should I treat this as a new build and follow his advice?

Ask 1000 people, you'll get 999 different advices for "break in oil ".

What I've done, and same on the B2200 engine I built for my '88 Mazda truck, was to remove the coil wire and crank the engine until the oil pressure light went off and stayed off, then did first start.

Yes, change the oil soon after, at least by 500 miles.

High zinc oil on a flat tappet engine in my book is a requirement. Do what you want however.

I used to work for a Navy Captain who did his twilight tour as CO, NB Ventura County in the late 90's. Jim Rainwater.

Please elaborate. I thought accepted wisdom was that zinc was needed to keep the cam from flattening, or prevent the heartbreak of psoriasis? Something like that?

Agreed. Three of the carriers I cruised on and three of my duty stations are long gone. Sad, but fond memories.

This is a lifter from a close to stock engine that had about 30K miles on it.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Both the cam (which was flat on that lobe) and the lifters were from a known good name manufacturer. There were no dual valve springs, in fact the spring pressure was just a little over stock. However, the owner just used regular oil (no zinc). I can not say for sure that the lack of zinc was 100% the reason for this failure, but this is not the only engine that I have seen fail under these circumstances. The way that I look at it is it is cheap insurance. How may dollars more is it JUST IN CASE. I ALWAYS use Bard Penn break in oil on all of my engines.
