Awesome Mike there you are thanks, I have been gathering parts and running sub assemblies all over the place the last few weeks but the car will start coming together in the next few days. The end result should be pretty special. Glad you are following along. _________________ Aircooled Vintage Works

Last weekend was huge! Lots of progress made on the car so I will catch up my build thread to that point.
First the trans came back from Racho. Its a freeway Flyer with all the bells and whistles inside as well as the late model throw out bearing upgrade, powder coated case, axle tubes, aluminum side plates... Pretty much as good as it gets.

Next I rebuilt my headlights. First blasting the inside sections and then painting them back in the proper silver. I left the outsides original to preserve the logos and patina, just like the car. I rechromed the headlights rings and got new Euro lenses to finish them off as well as all new seals from Wolfsburg West.
And an update on the undercoating removal. All gone now and nothing but beautiful original Ruby Red paint that has never seen the light of day until now!

Got the beam and plates all set and ready to get installed. 6 inch narrowed beam and 4 inch drop plates. This set up should give the car a killer stance and still have travel and a good ride... After some gloss black powedercoat the parts looked amazing!
Got my new steering box all painted up gloss black. I plan to add some chrome and Billet to it later on in the build but the main body got 3 coats of black and 3 of clear just to get it ready for the build. The Ebrake handle got powdercaoted in light gray which is also the color of the engine tin to match the interior.
This is how everything looks at this point. Body just about ready to go back on the pan and Im still detailing all the parts I have collected for the rebuild.

So at this point it was time to start the assembly of the pan. I was lucky to be able to get my buddy Jason from Atomic Jays to come down and help me get the car back into a roller. First order of business was to get the pan gasket on and cut. I bought a nice one from Wolfsburg West and it was well worth the price. Nice and playable. We marked and punched out the pan bolt holes in it and glued it in place.

Front end assembly started with the inspection cover plate after I put the shift rod in. I polished the shift rod before installing it and of the handful of them I have installed in the past, the polished one went into the new bushing WAY easier than others I have done. No problems. 5 minutes on the buffer may have made a difference, I can't say for certain, but it went in easy. I also polished the button head allen bolts for the inspection plate as well.
Front end ready to go on with polished caster shims, just because
I decided early on that if I was going to go this far with the car I was going to get some really nice hardware, no hardware store junk. I bought ARP polished fasteners for all the suspension parts and button head allens which I polished myself for all the other parts on the pan. Beam hardware is ARP

We slid the trailing arms in after they got the 3 coats of gloss black and 3 of clear.
Moving over to the trans I got the mount on the front and ready to install.
From there we got the torsion bars in and new bushings.
And followed that up with the spring plates.
And finished it off with the powder coated cover and polished allen head hardware.

The plates all dialed in and level.
And from there we popped the trans into place
I saw this cool product on Samba that I thought was a great idea. Its a mount for the fuel filter that uses the axle tube side plate studs and provides a solid structure to house the filter. It gets it out of the engine compartment and keeps it from moving around. I am pretty impressed with this piece. Fit was excellent, even with my side plates!

To mount the axles to the spring plates, another batch of ARP bolts...
Detail shot showing the trimmed bump stop area where the spring plate will now live.
Shot of the pan at this point.

Next up was spindle time. Paint detailed and cleared like the other parts.
Followed up with the brakes and braided lines.
I haven't decided what color the calipers are going to be yet so they got installed for now while I decide. I spent some time painting up the rotor hubs and rotor lip as well to add some visual pop.

After the front brakes were dialed in, wheels went on and we were halfway home!
Now we moved to the back and got the rear discs installed. Originally I had planned to go with drums out back in Porsche pattern but the rear disc kits on the market now just seemed to make a lot more sense so I picked one up and went that route after all.
Rear brakes on. Still debating caliper color...
With that done, we threw the rear wheels on and we had a roller. It was finally starting to look like a car again.

Some shots of the pan as a roller. Its a huge improvement over what it looked like when I took the car apart.

You made that pan look so awesome, lots of work. What did you use to punch the holes in the pan gasket? I need to do the same thing, Thx _________________ 1963 Ragtop Bug |

Thanks. its been a very involved road to get the car to this point To punch the holes I bought a punch from Harbor freight. It comes in a kit with several different sizes and one is pretty much dead on to fit the pan holes. Here is a link to a similar kit to what I used.

After a break it was back to work. Shift coupler installed.
Then the Berg shifter went in.
Hooked up fuel lines out of the pan and to the filter
Clutch line and adjuster set up.

Next up was running the new hard lines. I got a kit form Wolfsburg West which is very high quality. Started with the fronts. Since Im running a dual circuit master cyl for the car, we had to plug one of the ports and move a line but everything worked out just fine.
The only really goofy part to me was the brake line exit on the rear calipers. I really wish they had put this on the inside front of the caliper instead on the inside rear. It would really make for a cleaner brake line install but even so, its going to work out just fine.

Next up we got the pedals installed. When I first tore the car down I sent off my pedals to Pedal Werks here on Samba. He powder coated the pedals, rebuilt them and added new bushings. I also opted for the new bolt on style clutch cable mount and roller throttle pedal. I knew I wanted to run a cruiser pedal from the beginning so I cut and ground off the throttle pedal mount from my pan before powder coating it. I think this set up looks so much cleaner than the original and now that its all back together, I know I made the right choice.
And a shot of the completed brake lines in the master.

Now the fun was really about to start. I got a few friends to come over and together we got the body back on the freshly built pan.
