PostPosted: Tue Jul 26, 2016 5:07 pm    Post subject: Fuel injectors? Reply with quote

1977 Bus .
Been in storage for 12 years.
I have it running.
I have replaced all fuel lines and pump.
When driving i get a back fire when putting torque on the engine.
I have fuel system cleaner and sea foam in fuel.
It is getting better but I am wondering if the injectors are so gone that they are not spaying correctly.
Any ideas?
Thanks

Send the injectors off to have them cleaned and calibrated. Send the cold start valve at the same time. About $100.

As Randy said, I used both. Good results!

Wouldnt hurt to find an extra one or two to always have on hand.

I'd check the dizzy (distributor) advance to see if its advancing and not sticking. Sitting for 12 years the dizzy grease on the advance weights will get solid so it won't advance and you get no power and missing.

I found the vacuum part on the distributor only has one screw holding it on. Possible movement there. Finding a new screw could be fun. Also found minor rust in the distributor, Will clean and see how it works.
Thanks

Would I be better off sending the injectors out for cleaning or should I just replace them?

Depends on what they look like I suppose. But most of the time better to send out. Don't wait to long to put them back in when you get them back. Sometimes they go back to sleep and need to be waken back up (not cleaned again). I'm sure there are fuel injector service shops in Chicago area if you didn't want to send them out.

I found the vacuum advance on the distributor is missing a screw. Where would I be able to find one?

There's a lot of screws on one of those, which one?
Your best bet is likely Ace hardware, even Home depot has small metric machine screws.

Is it even possible to get new ones?
I found these websites that sale rebuilt ones.
http://vwparts.aircooled.net/Fuel-Injector-Rebuilt-1975-83-Type-2-0280150114-p/0-280-150-114.htm

http://www.jbugs.com/product/023906031.html?Category_Code=1978-vw-bus-fuel-injection-components

Does anyone have an opinion or knowledge on these? I've had my injectors cleaned 6 years ago but I'm thinking of getting a set of rebuilt ones.

OK I just replaced the fuel injectors. Now the bus wont run unless I feather the pedal. What would cause this problem?

or the injectors have a way different flow rate than what you took out.
