Aloha from Hawaii gang, its been awhile since I posted anything here on the samba forum but I know our community is the most well informed about anything VW so thats why I'm asking a question regarding my possible wheel/tire set up. Im looking at a 15x5.5 wheel with a 185/65R15 tire. Has anyone used this combination on a late model type 2, specifically a 1970 double cab? If so, will I have any clearance issues in the rear wheel wells or the front also for that matter? I really appreciate any and all suggestions, do's and don'ts on this plan. Thanks! and Aloha from way out here in the 50th State! Very Happy

although I can't directly answer your question, I have 215-50-17's on my 70 bus, BUT I have 5x112 on it.

the early bays do not have the inner fender well, so you should be ok

I'd love a double cab Wink

I don't think you'd have an issue. It really depends on the wheels offset.

A 1970 double-cab would be an early-model 1968~79 VW Type 2!

Whether you can use this wheel & tyre combination without interference problems will depend upon the wheel-offset.

I am not sure what the wheel-offset was for the factory-stock, 1968~70 VW Type 2's 14 x 5 inch steel wheels, but that of the 1971~79 VW Type 2's 14 x 5½ inch steel wheels, was 39 mm.

Many after-market 15 x 5½ inch accessory wheels for the 1968~79 VW Type 2's have a much too small an offset in my opinion; 20 mm being fairly typical. I would be aiming for an offset of about 35~39 mm and use a 195/70 R15C commercial-van tyre (standard size for VW Eurovan) to preserve the factory-stock rolling circumference and hence speedometer calibration and engine gearing.

If you want to use a 65-Series tyre, then a 16 x 6 inch wheel would be more appropriate, with a relatively common 195/65 R16C commercial-van tyre.

Thanks Nigel for your input. The wheels that I'm looking to use have a 4" offset according to the manufacture specs. It's the EMPI wide 5 bolt Porsche Fuch knock offs. Will the 185/65r15 be ok? How about a 195/65r15? Thanks, Fred

Sorry my mistake. These wheels have a 20mm off set (ET?) and the back spacing is 4 inches. Will either tire choices :185/65R15 or 195/65R15 work on my 1970 double cab with no clearance challenges? Thanks everyone
