Hi, I went to see a 1970 914 here in the UK during the week. It has been upgraded to a 2.0 engine with carbs, as well as what looks like a later gearbox?
I'm new to 914's but have restored a Karmann Ghia recently so know my way around old air-cooled cars a bit. Could anyone tell me if these photos are of what I hear spoken of as the "Hell hole"? It looks like there is definitely some rust there. Also under the car along the back of the sill there seemed to be a hole or two that didn't look like they should be there! Plus some surface rust around the front under the bumper.
The car is a 70 which I think came with an early rear change gearbox, is this a side change one?
Thanks for any advice.

The Hellhole is under the battery and that one looks decent with surface rust. The car has had a transmission change to a later "side shift" transmission (73-76).
With only those pics to go on it looks like a pretty nice car. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

Thanks, the bodywork was actually pretty good with all the interior trim & dash in one piece, just a couple of minor door dings from parking in the drivers door.
Do you know what the slit hole is next to the jacking point? _________________ 1969 UK Karmann Ghia build http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=518789&highlight= |

The pans look rusted through (Picture #5) a very bad sign for your pocket book. Jack it up and look at how bad they are as you don't want to drop through the bottom going down the highway. Under coating hides a lot. |

This car looks pretty nice, not sure what they are asking, but clean. I am new to the 914 world as I just purchased a 73, I am sure I will be asking questions here. Good luck with this one. _________________ 73 914 2.0 - sold
