Thank god we had just enough funding around to keep our Unicorn Hunting licenses up-to-date for just such an occasions as this...

For decades now, we've always wanted a nice, mainly stock matched #'s ZERO rust cream-puff to add to our VW family.... You know what kind, drive it, clean it, drive some more all while not having deal with a rot or rust issue.. or a simple proverbial survivor... And wow!!! We just happened to stumble on this one this past Thursday evening, while searching for something completely different thru CL ads (was looking for an S10 rear bumper cover with the cut for the hitch and POOF there was the ad not even 10 minutes old & if you are curious what we paid? all I will say is... our heads are still spinning actually)...

My son & a great friend went up to fetch it at 6am this morning and now are trailering it back the other 7 hour homebound trip... We can't wait to go through the box of original paperwork that dates all the way back to 1962...

Much much much more to come. Cool

Nice find you have. Do tell what is the cost of something like that in your region.

Here in the Midwest..? '64 down, rust free & nearly flawless paint & interior? An easy 8-10k all day long here... We paid less than .5 of the lesser amount. or even better yet .25 of what we spent on the oval to get it where it is now... So yeah, unicorns still exist : )

The couple that originally owned it was a very nice retired couple, they bought it 20+ years ago from the original owner in GA.. rust free, accident free and then they did a pan off 10-ish years ago, had the trans rebuilt, rebuilt it to a 1641cc & Weber progressive (yes it scoots pretty good too but definitely needs fresh gas). They gave us some pics of his resto as well but haven't looked through the stack of papers that came with it yet and then basically after they were done working on it, it spent most of its time in either the garage or under a covered deck off their house ever since... It was a farm house as well with a 2 mile gravel road in & out, so I imagine that's why the engine compartment is covered heavily with gravel dust.

Sooo... Since unloading it & a quick tool around the block about the worst things we can find is:
Fuel tank needs to be drained, new filter down below & some fresh fuel...
Engine & compartment need a serious but simple clean & detail...
Paint could use a light buff...
Install the new leds into the snowflakes & wire them up...
Re-install the wiper mechs..
Oh yeah, clean the windows and a light vacuum...
-LOL-

Never had a VW restoration project take only one day before... I'm kinda liking this... LOL

Put in the rear led's & installed the completed tail housings back into their original positions. Removed the fire hazard in the engine bay, relocated the filter to under the fuel tank, drained out the majority of the old gas, siphoned a few sips from the lawnmower so we can make it to the gas station for nice full tank of fresh fuel... Then did a very light quick buff, detailed off the mountains of excess wax all over the place & a nice tire dress and voila! ...So we grabbed all the tiggers, headed to Mobil and filled up with fresh fuel and then spent most of the day just tooling around 50-75 problem free miles! Car easily hit 80 on the expressway and driving it make you feel like just rolled off the showroom floor!

For years now I've been dying to drive over by the Byron nuclear plant in a sunset/twilight condition and see if they'd allow us to shoot our VW's there... Can't really see why they wouldn't as it passes directly on a public road which passes within 50 yards of both cooling towers & there's also some really cool looking industrial piping as well as the towers themselves to shoot against... But I'll stop in their security gate first and ask permission. Who knows, maybe they'll actually let us even or maybe provide an application maybe to backdrop some shots from in non-sensitive areas from within the plant itself...

These are the miles the PO's put on it after finishing their restoration in 1999/2000... he zeroed the odometer upon finishing the car and only drove 3,501 miles in 16 years, or 218 miles a year. Wow!!!

Double tapped the iphone to close some background pages and found the original ad that started the whole purchase... Needless to say, the ad was probably only up less than 30 minutes as after the phone call that set this in motion they quickly retired the ad...

Started going thru some of the paperwork today as well & they also gave us 'The Volkswagen Beetle" book by Nigel Grimshaw and they were recreating page #48... Other than the orange peanuts & a 1200cc in it I think they pretty much nailed it on the head...

It's kind of alot to digest... receipts for everything going as far back as 1962... It would be amazing to find some original sales documentation somewhere in the pile of papers... LOL
