I have an upcoming winter project which is a 1965 Panel van with OG paint. I bought it as it was originally a VW dealership parts delivery vehicle and still has some remnants of the hand painted livery. I have never done an OG paint resto with such a patina and so am stumped at how to tackle it, as I like to do as much of the work myself. It was turned into a homemade camper back in the late 70s.
It was originally exported from Germany to the US via Washington DC, and I bought it from a chap in Arkansas. I have been trying to find out the dealership that originally owned the vehicle.
Do I keep the heavy patina and show all repairs in new shiny paint or try and match the paint with fake patina or take the patina back to the original paint and recreate the livery/logos in blue as it used to be?
Looking for a few opinions or other options as I would ideally like to keep as much history as possible. Thanks.

I would be curious to see what a little CLR would do. Perhaps bring back the lettering a bit and bring back the original paint a bit (but not too much - I love the patina!) |
