You could do what I did .. Buy filthy oil covered long block
with water in it for $70 approx burnt exhaust valve siezed pistons..
. Discover it was an AS21 case with absolutely no grooves in the saddles. Buy a set of +0/+0 bearings Reuse crank and conrods. Buy a set of 1641 pistons and cylinders. New camshaft and followers, 215 mm clutch , reuse old cylinder heads from another engine. Assemble behind bus in open air last April.
About $1000 all in.
Has now done 11000 miles.. _________________ Ancient vehicles and vessels

Ok so im still kinda just looking at my options... I called a local shop about motors they have built in stock..
They quoted me $1900 exchange for a 1600 dp long block and $2900 for a 1776 long block with exchange.. Im not extremely versed on the VW motor market but that seems a bit steep to me. _________________ The United States Constitution

Any conclusions? I like the r&r idea. Combine that with vwracerdaves idea for the idfs and you will be set. Works well for me, i like to find a low mileage FI beetle, pluck the engine and rebuild the top end. That way you get an awesome rotating assembly thats balaned from VW. If you lighten and balance a set of aftermarket pistons to bump up compression to 8 and use all the money you saved on the best set of cylinder heads you can afford you will absolutely get the most power and longevity from a 1600cc as opposed to the sp 1776. My dp 1600cc topped with a two barrel carb can push my full body beetle over 100 mph with ease. It will also climb a grade in 4th, and I can pop the clutch in first without touching the throttle. |
