I recall the concern of where to keep the dipstick, for those of us running the Save My Bug temp sender stick...
It's been rattling around my skull for a few weeks, and I ran across This item...

Type III dipstick conversion tube!!
No affiliation, or personal experience, but thought it may be the answer we're looking for!
Mount this in the engine bay, out of the way(maybe on left air cleaner mount
.?), and store your factory dipstick in it..... *shrug*.... Just thinkin..... _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

That's a neat idea, I may pursue that! That would allow the reverse storage scenario too, my habit lately has been too leave the dipstick in for convenient oil checking and put in the save my bug when I'm about to do an extended interstate run. |

Hey Joe, That is a neat idea,
Up to now, I've just been wrapping mine in a napkin storing it in a small box in my driver door with the dipstick and 2 bottles of marvel mystery oil.
I've mulled trying to modify the save-mybug stick too, maybe putting a quick disconnect on the wire for ease of removal, cause it's a 8itch trying to remove it wire and all,
or having to move the belt a bit to the side to get it out the oil tube without snagging the temp sensor end and bolt/nut/wire attachment.
Figured I could mark it with hi - low lines for oil level with a scribe or even the dremel with a light touch of a grinding disc, but it's been one of them "ain't got a round-tu-it" things yet.
But this idea would work too!

My dipstick is in a napkin in my glove box! Lol.... I agree with attempting to mark the temp sensor, but would be Leary of any change in the material causing erroneous readings.. I think a quick disconnect and using this tube with the original dipstick is the safest way..... And one more conversation peice on Our Thing!!
"Why is your dipstick way over there and not attached to the engine?".... _________________ '74 Thing, "Our Thing"....

I would have a stock air cleaner and mount it to the side so you could tell everyone it was to check the oil in the air cleaner. Yes I am that weird. |

If you are fortunate enough to have a "universal" case, you could mount the Type 3 dipstick adapter the way it is meant to be, and use both; one for oil level, and the other for your temp switch.

I added the SMB heat sensor. My old dipstick leaked oil. I hoped the smb stick wouldn't but it does as well. Not a ton, but between that drip and small one underneath it can be messy on my floor...which I cover with a rubber mat.
Not sure why the stick is leaking oil. Too much pressure?
But anyway, I store the old dipstick in a pink shop cloth on the right side of the engine bay. I have a small bungie wrapped around it that holds it in place |
