The general consensus on a by-pass filter is it's pretty ineffectual compared to the modern full-flow filtration. The by-pass supposedly only filters a small proportion of engine oil. It possibly offers a little extra cooling effect but I think it fair to say most people use them for the period look rather than any practical reason.

One of the funniest responses to the discussion I've read was mark's :

mark tucker wrote:
just hide the spin on filter and use the other for a bypass filter for fine filtering a portion of the oil, or just make it look like it is doing it's job but keep some extra sparking bolts&some rags, tools in the canaster.could also run a coil of tubing in it to heat up some soup for lunch&dinner when your on the road with the oil temp.or even a tiny cornish hen.

Hi. Agreed on the other peoples comments. But please recognize the documented importance the by-pass oil filters perform on the diesel big rig trucks. This is one reason those engines obtain such high mileage engine life. Take aa small amount of oil and filter it finer.
On my '71 bus, 1600, I run a popular setup with the 1 1/2qt sump and full flow filter. BUT, I added a by-pass Baldwin B164 filter. The outlet from this filter is about 1/32" diameter.
Hope this helps. Bill.
