Picked up a previously stolen rabbit for $400, it's got 140,000kms on it and it's in good condition! It was hot wired and the ignition cylinder was drilled out, I swapped all those parts from my 1980 rabbit and plugged a battery in and everything worked except when I went to start the car and got nothing (no starting sound) so I opened up the hood and noticed an empty whole in the side of the motor...... Someone jacked the starter! I searched it up and apparently I can't use the starter that's on my gass rabbit because it won't have enough whatever to start the diesel. Is this true or can I swap mine onto the new rabbit? If not does anyone no who or where I could pick one up for relatively cheap (below $100)?
Thanks, Trevor! |

You can put the diesel starter in the gas car, but the gas starter doesn't have the torque to turn the diesel over. You can try it, but it may not last long. I always upgrade to a diesel starter whenever I have to replace a starter. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Thanks, I'm going to use the one from my gas car to see if it will actually run and if so then I'll cough out the money and get the right diesel one! |

How long has it been sitting for? I would seriously consider a new timing belt before trying to start this motor, as almost any miss-timing will bend valves. |

Honestly have no idea, the guy I got it from got it from a tow truck company who found it on the side of the road a bunch of years back. So it probably hasn't ran in around 5-10 years?.. |

If it has been sitting that long, first thing I'd do is a new timing belt before even trying to turn it over, no question, as not only does it turn the cam, it has to drive the injection pump. The T-belt on a diesel works much harder than its counterpart on a gas motor. That is why they are changed more frequently on them. |
