This is a build thread on the 86 Westfalia I acquired after my 89 had a fire. Out of great sadness, joy!

djkeev PM'd me about this unit, 92k, very solid engine and transmission, super clean inside, new tires and rims, needs a new poptop tent, (which came with it,) and a bath. Had been sitting in Dave's yard for two years, came out to the East Coast from California three years ago. I contacted the very nice owner and bought it sight unseen.

My plan is to transplant my Bostig conversion and Transaxle from my '89, the fire was inside and nothing under it was affected. Some very lucky person will end up with the 86's 2.1L and tranny. The PO had bought a newly rebuilt ECU from GoWesty!

The van has new 16" tires on aluminum rims (5), and the owner gave me three new 16" tires on VW rims. My 89 has new GoWesty 15" Michelin tires and rims, so I have no need of these tires.

This will be a slow thread, I have to finish the garage cleanup and removal stuff.

The fire thread is here, that's where photos of my dismantling progress will be posted, not here.

Those who recall the complete rebuild on the 87 I did, here's that link:

Oh and it came with a Behr air conditioning system, which I know absolutely NOTHING about, but all A/C theory is the same, right?

The tent is shot full of holes, and a mouse had moved in upstairs, no photo.
First part of this will be to replace it, but working on the 89 first.

Well, this cherry has been burst! Found time to work on it, have to pass Mass auto inspection. One headlight didn't work, and the other one had an inch of water inside.

Pulled it apart and found some bizarro wiring system from the PO. I don't mind people doing their own thing, just wish they'd leave behind detailed notes.

The non-working headlight had a broken wire, Ah easy fix! Nope, wires are corroded and I'll have to re-wire everything. Wish me luck....

Pat had installed those lights and was most proud of them! He called them Projectors but I'm unclear about what they really are.
He really wanted me to do likewise but I declined.

Pat often hired City mechanic "buddies" to do what he needed done at bargain rates. Honestly though, he drove it for less than a year so not much was hired out.

Remember, I told you one light didn't work when you picked it up.
Too bad if they cut factory wires to install them.

You'll get it sorted. Overall I saw this unit as a largely unmolested unit.

Yuck. Get you to Jay Brown and get a new harness for the headlights, root out all that stuff. I hear there are some success stories getting E-code H4s installed, if you're interested.

I'll sort it out, I have an electronics background via ham radio and commercial work. I rewired most of the 87 I rebuilt.

Dave, I haven't had time to dig deep yet, maybe the headlights are an anomaly!

I didnt dig deep either but from the limited service I've done to it, all seems well.

I removed the old headlight wiring system. Does anyone use this system and wants these parts? Just pay for postage....

I traced back the wiring to the fuse panel. A VOM (Volt-Ohm Meter) is a must have tool for this work.

You didn't get to see all the "extra" wires I removed. BTW, don't use wire nuts on an automobile. Connectors that crimp in-line are my preferred method, then install heat shrink tubing over them. Some come pre-made with heat shrink.

I took the lights from my 89 and used them here. I installed a new Jay Brown headlight relay, which is safer and allows higher wattage bulbs. You don't overload the VW light switch, either!

Then I replaced the side marker lights and rear tail lights with ones from the '89. These are all LED bulbs I'd bought from GoWesty. Still have one side marker light not turning on, will look at that tomorrow, have to work tonight.

Inspection tomorrow, if the lights can stay on for 10 minutes......

The bumpers on the 86 aren't cherry. Have you considered putting your newer ones on the older unit?

Dave,
No, not even sure how to remove them, but good idea, I'll consider doing it.

Any other thoughts? Tomorrow is tent installation Day!

All electrical items working as specified. Waiting for 9/1 to do the inspection, may as well have an extra month.

Started on the new popup tent going in. The old one removed easily, I carefully labeled what went where.

Then meandered off to the fabric store to get something to make new curtains. One should always compliment the colors that are there, not do same-same. While the picture doesn't do this nice cloth justice, you can see how the floor follows the decorating rule I just cited.

Well, I installed the tent, what a PITA. The PO sold me the tent he bought new from Bus Depot, most likely two years ago. I couldn't get it to fit, and kept thinking it was my fault. After several re-tries, turns out it's 8 inches too short. There are nylon cords that lock in the tent top, these stuck out about the exact distance needed to make it fit. I'm not happy with BD!

So, I tossed the directions out and did it my way. Had to cut the back section and add a panel about 8 inches wide. Yes, it'll work fine, and match the new curtains. (When I get around to sewing them....)

I put on the air scoops and the Jack Bombay lifts. I can't live without the latter, they're great for my back.

Were the customers turning rabid? I can understand why...

I sew, and when I read about the tents not fitting, my thought was they might be off by one inch. The glaring error I had screams "incompetent ".

Oh, and the zippers suck!
