Trying to get the right rear drum off my bug to replace the shoes. Left side came off easy but the right side wont budge. It spins freely so the shoes arnt stuck. Cant find a puller that will work to pull it off. Been shooting penetrating fluid in the splines and tapping with a hammer. Also tried heating it up with a torch and pulling it. Im out of ideas. |

If you pull on the drum while rotating it slightly does it bind up and stop spinning? |

You need to release the brake shoe barrels by turning the spindles through the adjuster port w/screwdriver. forget which way to turn but you will figure it out. |

I have one of these pullers and it worked very effectively for me. You may also need to get some extra long bolts to get it to fit if the lug nuts are too short.

Definitely try this - if the brake drum has enough wear, you will have a ridge on the edge of the drum that snags the brake pads when you try to remove it. |

loosened the barrels all the way so there is a gap between the pad and drum. Still wont budge. Banged on it with a baby sledge still nothing |

is the car movable with the tires on it? If so just put the tires on along with the castle nut loose and drive it back and forth to see if that will loosen it up. _________________ Rick

went out and tried popping the clutch in forwards and reverse after heating up the drum around the shaft and putting penetrating oil on again and were at the same spot. Tried shaking the car and wheel as well.. |

I had the same issue with one rear drum. I tried everything up to a 6-foot steel pipe extension on a 3/4" breaker bar and it wouldn't budge. After reading a few threads here I bought the infamous torque tool which loosened the bolt quickly and easily! Seriously! I was amazed how easily it loosened that nut! And the tool helps put the correct amount of torque on the nut when reinstalling too. |

beat as hard as you can on the face...youre basically trying to shock loose the rust..even if you break the drum dont worry, you can break it enough to get behind it with a puller |

Phone your local rental tool shop and see if they have a drum puller.... _________________ In Stereo, Where Available! |

Try not beating on the axle. A '68 with a 4 speed is still a swingaxle car and while a replacement axle is pretty cheap, it's a lot of work to change it. _________________

I use a chain
bolt the chain to the drum with with lugs
leave about 2-3 feet in between attachments
take a big HEAVY pipe or other handy heavyweight object
wrap or attach the chain around heavy object
now position object with slack chains near drum and pull away wildly
the shock when the chain tightens, and the heavy object being hurled away provides a massive shock slide hammer effect
a few good flailing efforts and it comes off or the car off the stands
increase inertial offerings as required
so much for bent trailing arms and rear wheel alignments, huh!
you are so busy saying you will get new brakes you assume the suggestion to back off the adjusters was nothing
many a time a ridge is made on the inner edge of the drum and it hangs up on the shoes until they are moved inward to a diameter lesser than the ridge
this brake adjustment stuff is so important
it needs to be done over and over again throughout the brake shoe replacement process and afterwards as regular maintenance. |

Tried everything suggested and more still can't get the damn thing off.
Going to try leaving it with the jack attached with pressure against the axle and keep spraying with kroil and see if it comes loose. |

It would be interesting to see if the torque tool works after all those attempts. |

The torque multiplier tool is fantastic, but axle nut removal wasn't the problem.
What johnnypan said is what you gotta do. Enough perseverance and violence will eventually get it loose. Hopefully. Good luck. |
