|
|
My early '60 VW with split case gearbox has been leaking oil through the gearshift housing bushings. Currently, it has this style of bushings:
Someone recommended me a conversion to this style of bushings + seal:
I've got some questions:
1) Does anyone have experience installing this type of bushing + seal in a split case gearshift housing?
2) What do I need to do in order to fit them? Does the housing needs to be machined?
3) Is this indeed an improvement? Does it prevent leaks?
4) Do these bushings have the same inside diameter?
Thanks in advance. |

Admittedly I do not know anything about split case transmissions.
But looking at the images that you have posted. It looks like the seal and bushing that holds the seal are the two pieces that you need to prevent the trans oil from leaking into the interior of your car. I deleted an image to demonstrate what I'm trying to say.
It seems to me, that if you install the seal and carrier bushing that should help. Again I have no experience with this trans. I'm just using logic based on what I see.
Good Luck. _________________ I have learned over the years.

Don't waste your time with this aftermarket junk.
The split bushing on the right is too large in OD and the split makes it so you can't press it in.
Then the center part fits loose in the nose cone while the ID is too big to support anything. If you already have them just throw them away and save your self the grief.
If you want to upgrade to a seal, get a later nose cone from a full synchro trans and remove it's seal holder/bushing and install that. Genuine VW parts that fit. _________________

I've got a '60 Beetle with the one year only nose cone and rubber mount. I definitely want to keep that.
Let's say that I would go with NOS German parts. Would these bushings fit in my nose cone and would everything work well? |

He is saying to take a later nosecone and remove that seal/bushing from it and install it on your 60 only nosecone.
But none of them are listed as fitting a 60 only 61 up on the various websites _________________ Rick
