Yes kids, THAT was a huge deal back then.

As he told us on his last broadcast today, on this day 80 years ago Vin Scully became a baseball fan, and specifically a Giants fan.

The boxscore of Game 2 of the World Series was displayed in the Chinese laundry store and it caught the attention of the 8-year-old Bronx-born kid when he was walking home from grammar school. It was Oct. 2, 1936.

“As I walked by, I stopped to look. The Yankees beat the Giants, 18-4, and I remember looking at it and I felt so sad for the Giants,” says Vin Scully. “So I became, that instant, a rabid Giants fan.”

But the Giants love affair only lasted until Scully landed a broadcasting job with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1950 — “It’s amazing what a paycheck will do,” Scully jokes — working with the late broadcasting legend Red Barber. Scully was 22 when he started in Brooklyn, before embarking on a journey that has taken him from Ebbets Field to the Los Angeles Coliseum and, finally, to Dodger Stadium, where his singular, mellifluous voice has delivered Dodger baseball to generations of fans.

Scully’s career came full circle in another extent, a fitting and tidy bow on an inimitable life.

“The last game of this season, which is a Giants-Dodgers game (in San Francisco), is Oct. 2, 2016, exactly 80 years to the day (actually, to the very minute) that I saw that boxscore and became a baseball fan,” says Scully, who credits a fan with alerting him of the symmetry.

It is one of my visions of heaven to find Dodger stadium beyond the pearly gates, with Vinny's soothing voice over a handy transistor radio, making for an endless summer, where it is always "time for Dodger baseball."

Vaya con Dios, Vin.
