I have a few questions on the correctness for a tool roll for a 1950 split beetle. First, it the roll itself cloth like the seat material? or canvas?
Second, please look at this picture. Are these tools correct for a 1950 tool roll? Appreciate any input. Tim

The open end wrench is a 13mm x 8mm. I think I also have a 12mm x 8mm and maybe a 14mm x 8mm? |

Tim, Split had the 10x14 Hazet, 8x12 came later, the short socket wrench is wrong too, should be a 14 mm, hubcap puller is wrong...there wasn't any, tool bag is also wrong....it's late oval/ early big window, some split had the olive green toolbags (but different to yours) some had the ones made from interior fabric, beside the tool roll & jack VW dealership offered an airpump, bakelite motometer tyregauge and spare wheel bolt.
If you need any of the right tools, I can help you:-) |

Hi. That tool roll material is identical to mine, in my '57 Oval. I have that hubcap pull tool as well. Don't know on the rest as I'm no expert on tool roll tools.

I give up! I try so hard to buy the right stuff for my 1950 split, people tell you it is the right stuff, and it is not. I will sell what I don't need and correct this but I will ask the pro's here before I buy anything else. |

Ok, so the bag is wrong. Maybe oval? The black generator wrench and screw drivers are correct? right? The hub cap puller does not belong there, the small socket is wrong because it is not 14mm and the open end Hazet wrench is wrong because it is not a 10mm x 14mm. and the other tool is suppose to have the rivet and mine don't.
anyone want to trade anything? I have a few partial tool kits like this. I guess I will place an ad. |

I want to revisit this blog. Please look at these pictures and tell me if this 1950 tool roll is correct now for 1950? I also heard that split tool rolls were made from left over pieces of original seat cloth. Is this true? Would these repro tool roll be correct then?

It looks mostly correct based on the thread links mentioned above.
It should have a fan belt too.
I think that is a later lug bolt?
Didn't Split Bugs have one with a more flat head?
The air pressure gauge is not VW-delivered but may be period-correct.
Yes on the seat material or other scraps being used to create the bags. _________________ How to Post Photos

I agree, my '52 had a green bag like the rusty one. |

My Oct '51 had the green canvas version. In my opinion, either one was correct. They used left over seat material when they had it. When they didn't they used the canvas because it was cheaper than buying seat material specifically for tool rolls. I also wonder if they had a bunch of green canvas left over from the war. Remember in 1950 the war had only ended a little under five years earlier. _________________ Chris

Does anybody have measurements of the jack bag, I would like to make one out of the remaining good bits of old upholstery material from my split.
Also the dimensions of the tool roll please, and some instructions on how to stitch it together? |
