I have developed a leak in my sprinkler, it's on the PVC side. I've repaired PVC without any problem. This, however, is something a little different. Before I dig in too deep and start sawing, I thought I'd ask on here before I start.
1. What's the metal fitting between the PVC for? Is that a pressure reducer?
2. Is this something I have to cut out or does it screw together for removal?
3. Any other thoughts/ideas/info or things to consider?

Where is this in the system? It might be a one-way (anti-siphon) valve. Not the kind our local code requires, but these do vary across the country. |

Do you mean the greenish/bluish thing? One way valve is a possibility. Another idea would be a pressure regulator. Looks like the supply line and sprinkler line are 1/2" and the mystery item is 3/4"? Maybe bushing(s) to go from 1/2 to 3/4?
Lots going on there.... _________________ Larry in OB

It is the bluish/greenish thing. Just wasn't sure what it was, if there was anything special about it, anything special about removing it/etc.
It's located near the 5 zone stations. _________________ Oprn wrote: I'm getting to the age that any self propelled woman (no wheel chair or walker) looks HOT!! Oooo! look at that Babe! She made it from the dining room all the way to the TV room without help!! Hubba, hubba!! |

It's called a Backflow Test cock similar to an anti siphon valve. and, usually if
the ground freezes in your area you probably also have 2 other underground
items.
1. Freeze relief valve & 2. a Winterizer valve. _________________ V.W.owner since 1967 |

Regionally, an anti-siphon valve may also be called a "check valve."
- just in case the cat at the irrigation shop uses that term.
If it is a regulator it will have a predetermined psi rating marked on it fairly clearly. If it says "70psi" for instance somewhere- and has a waste gate (escape hole or gap) it is definitely a regulator and not a check valve. If you are on a pressurized system or well- it may be in place to protect a short sprinkler station (say 4 heads instead of the usual 8-10) or perhaps a drip system.
On the install, I see no slip joints. Everything there is likely righty tighty, so a cut is likely needed to remove. Perhaps there's a straight run of pvc below the photo that allows room to cut, and room to patch? _________________

The culprit. While I was at Lowe's getting replacement parts, I had the brass piece with me. A guy that was in the sprinkler business was also there - I guess he noticed me holding the piece and trying to find what I needed. I asked him about the brass piece and he said it was indeed an "anti-siphon" valve. He went on to say that the county makes them install it so that incase water pressure is ever lost, water from the sprinkler system won't get sucked back into the water supply. He didn't think it was much use but that was the county's reason. Anyway, I got the parts and I am fixing it.
Thanks for all of your responses - Hitest, old DKP driver, OB Bus and KTphil. _________________ Oprn wrote: I'm getting to the age that any self propelled woman (no wheel chair or walker) looks HOT!!
