I hope this thread doesn't turn into an autostick pro vs con thing. In fact when I was searching craigslist I didn't include anything about an autostick, I just typed in "vw engine" and found it. The fact that it's an autostick was pure coincidence.

That said, everyone knows I've been driving an autostick since I was 14, and I have no problems with them whatsoever, so it's staying an autostick. But if it had been a 4 speed I still would have jumped on it for that price.

Thanks Tim!

Do you mean the upholstery, or the running hot issue? I gave up on the upholsterer ever getting around to my car. As far as running hot, that thread went 30+ pages with no solutions (except for some people to eventually say 220° oil temps were OK) so I guess I will just run it as is.

Any performance mods for the 72 ? Maybe bump it up to 1776?

Hopefully you can patch the hood. Super beetle hoods of that vintage are no longer available new.

Why wouldn't it be? It's geared exactly the same as a stock 4 speed, and will shift quicker.

Edit: It does use the smaller 180mm clutch disc though

Talk about overheating issues....

I wouldn't put anything bigger than maybe a 1776 mated to an autostick, it wont handle the power, and you'd have to keep a near-stock cam/carb in it to keep the vacuum signal to operate the servos and stuff.

Honestly the 1776 would probably push the limits of my budget anyway- I'll look into it but I have zero problem leaving it stock 1600 dual port.

If I decided to go the sale route on it, there are old people out there who might want to buy it after it's fixed up too... Smile

Planet Caravan is always appropriate for a slow cruise through town in a VW on a rainy day.

Anyone that saves a bug or any VW for that matter is ok with me whether or not they plot destruction. Kudos to any of you guys that pull a car out of the shit pile and put it back on the road. I'm watching this post to see what he does with this car. Very Happy

Obviously there have been some deleted posts in this thread due once again to johnnypan's bullshit.

Anyway, since he claims I got "suckered" for $700, here are some more pics showing virtually no rust on the car, and straight body (never been wrecked)

I took down the pic of the previous owner because I don't want to post anyone's image on here without their approval. If I contact him back and he says it's OK I'll put it back up.
