Hey guys, new to VW's learning as I go. I have a 1600 dp in my 63 and my neighbor took it for a spin. He said he thinks it's running on 3 cylinders, sitting at idle he took the spark plug wire off the distributor to cylinder #3, and the car kept idling fine. My question is, now what?

I'd start with a tune up.
spark plugs
plug wires

Does it have points and condenser or electronic ignition?

Thanks for your reply, it has points and condenser. Should I replace all the spark plugs or check and replace #3?

Before throwing parts that it may or may not need, I'd do a quick compression test on number 3 cylinder. Have you pulled the valve cover off and make sure a push rod hasn't fallen off and the rockers are moving correctly?

Do the usual tune-up steps (valve adjustment, point gap, timing, gap spark plugs, check SP wire/connector resistance). Often this flushes out something that is amiss, but costs you nothing.
